It happens in that Bormes bay , an inversion.
In the north sea in my 6m dory/bathtub heading north from Thrumster harbour to Wick harbour racing the fog bank at 30knots, only 5 nautical miles distance and it caught me as I turned into Wick bay, I had been running parallel to the encroaching front and then managed to out distance it when running west away from it, got in to the harbour just as the fog enveloped the boat and my 3 passengers as I slowed off to the 3knts speed limit, it looked like a grey/white wall rolling over a flat calm sea and getting higher as it rolled up between the narrowing cliffs on the north and south heads of the bay.It happens in that Bormes bay , an inversion.
Woke up once and it was a pea souper .Spent the night on the visitors Berth there .Waited , waited etc had to get back to Cannes for a flight .
Saw loadsa locals goi out on day boat etc ( zilch radar ) heard outboards on full chat stood on the sea wall peering into the gloom .
Got my Furuno manual out .A lunch we let slip , kids wearing life jackets etc even found an old brass fog horn .
Within 200 m of the land it was stark bollock blue sky med sun ☀, with water skiers ( the OB noise )
The fog only effects that bay it’s surrounded by steep hills and warm air relatively to the sea drops down at night as it cools and condensers .
Live n learn .
Thats the only time since 2005 I have to use and been grateful for radar in the med ……all 200 m worth distance wise .
So when it came to moving to an Itama with zero radar arch …..so what ?
Watching the sea, so calm and inviting, on such a beautiful evening is toughAnd dreaming about leaking diesel tanks.
