If so, yes, you would be importing the Elling into the UK.
If the boat was originally in the UK, and you were not the original exporter, AFAIK, you would have to pay VAT when you bring it into the UK.

Plus if brought back to the UK after the end of this year would need to get assessed and certified for compliance with RCR - the new UK equivalent of the EU RCD. Would think that might be simple, but may not be - particularly with engines.

That’s the problem I think I would have. Because I’m the original exporter I can bring it back to the UK under a concession apparently negotiated by the CA/RYA, although I’ve seen nothing official yet.
I have mechanical KAD43’s. Would they pass the RCR compliance, dunno? I’m not aware this has been tested yet.

You mean 20 % off , ie VAT free if you buy a boat in the EU as a new found third party guy .

Or the fact the used U.K. market prices are extra buoyant ( for those with U.K. vat paid boats in the U.K. ) because cheapie competition from the EU have evaporated .

Taking back control has added 20% to virtually everything and anything purchased from a private EU citizen by a private UK citizen who wishes to import it into the UK.
In the case of a boat this could amount to considerable sums of money, possibly tens of thousands.
It needs pointing out that the 20% is on the total transaction which includes the purchase price and the costs of shipping and any other expence involved.
As "itama" has helpfully pointed out it has considerably limited the choice of boats on the market for a UK boater who purchase horizons extend beyond Dover.
It has also added 20% to the cost of selling your boat to any EU buyer.
On the considerable upside , selling your boat to New Zealand or Australia is tariff free. :)

But on the other hand, when boaters realise the EU is a wormer/ nicer place to boat, you save 20% on boats bought out there.

Now that the UK is our of the EU, you can buy a new boat, take it to the Med and not pay ANY VAT. Just follow the TA rules.


Doubt that many of the folks unable to pay their heating/eating bills will be taking advantage of this terriffic wheeze :)
