Yes the unit you describe is a dynastart. They can be rewound but it costs about £70. Most MD6 engines have an alternater fitted as well. As long as the dynastart will start your engine I would not bother having it fixed as it only produces 135watts when working. You could take the two wires off the back of it and use your alternater to charge both your batteries, using a 1-2-both switch. It has worked this way for mine for three years now with no problems. Or you could check out the for sale forum, there have been a couple of MD6 breaking for spares in the past. Hope this helps.

Hi Joeh.
I received your PM but i seem to have had problems replying to you. In reply to your question, I can put my hand on my dyno when running , it is warm but not to hot to touch. Take the dyno off the engine, (make sure you know which way the wires go back) to take it apart there are two bolts that need undoing, check the commutator is ok, and check the bearings, bushes at each end. If these are badly worn it can cause it to run hot, but the good news is it can be fixed cheaply. Take it to a car auto elecy shop, the type that fixes alternators and dynamos and get them to test it and fit new bearings. problem solved! Hope this helps Dave.

Hi

The Albin Vega has an MD6A as standard so I have a lot of info on the Dynastart. Can be the bearings as stated but could also be shorted windings, either on the charging or starting circuit. Re-winding can be expensive so keep your eyes open for second-hand ones, they reach between £50 - £100. I can usually lay my hands on one but just sold my last stock one, should have another by the end of the year. Hope this helps.
