I have a brand new ribeye TL 260 and the technical spec says maximum power outboard for this tender is 6hp but this is not enough to get on the plane with me in it, would it be safe to go any bigger than 6hp and if so what power would I need to be able to get the tender on the plane with 2 adults in it

cheers

For inspiration, here is TCM's tender:

I have the TL280 with an 8hp 4 stroke which is the max rated for that size. With a 12 stone adult and a teenager it will plane no problem, 2 average adults, nope. On my own it reaches 17knts.

I didn't want to exceed the maximum as it is widely used by my daughters, for the 260 I reckon you'd need 10hp, maybe a 6/8hp 2 stroke would do the trick though.

When I had my Honwave 270, we tried a tohatsu 9.9hp on it (4S) and weight-wise it was fine. It went like stink and planed easily with two blokes in it. You do need to be a bit careful though when you are planing as you start getting air if there are any waves!

I had the same one now owned by Andy59 of this forum. I had a 10hp 4 stroke Tohatsu and it went very nicely, up on the plane very quickly and fast enough to be exciting but not too scary.

If you can find a nice condition 8 hp 2 stroke Yam then that would be a great match for the tender. It's no heavier than a 6hp 4 stroke, but the added punch of the extra hp and the 2 stroke will almost certainly get two adults on the plane. It's a great engine, bulletproof, but as i'm sure you know you cant buy new 2 strokes anymore. The much talked about Tohatsu 9.8 would be even pokier, but is almost double the reccomended hp so you may feel that's a bit OTT, depending on who will be using it. If it's just yourself, a 9.8 will be fine.

We have a honwave 2.4m with new Yamaha 6hp, planes with one adult, been a laugh going out over the Solent wave hopping in it over the last coupe of weeks, but just doesn't get on the plane with one adult and one child (which I am disappointed about).. Goes like stink with one child in it though!

Shawn,

Your dinghy and outboard are a great match, see its all about the laws of physics and power to weight ratio.

I suggest a trip to slimming world, that will do the trick

Seriously, my Avon 280 has max up rated 9.9.

My yam 15is the same engine exactly , my mate Tim went one extra, he's fitted a 20hp yam 4 stroke, but it's only the same speed as mine.

Shawn, as you know, I have the 260 with the Yammie 6 hp, and this planes quite easily for me. Have not tried with SWMBO on board.

The engine you need is a Yamaha 8Hp but this is a two stroke as Nick_H says. If you can find one get it, if you can't as they are little like rocking horse stuff a 6Hp it can be uprated to 8Hp. This is the smallest lightest 2 cylinder engine you can get.

The 2 stroke 5 Hp Merc/mariner is only a single cylinder, much lighter but wil only just plane with one person. The Yam 8Hp will allow your dinghy to plane with 2 adults and a dog on board. If you go any bigger, as in 9.9 Yam or 10Hp Mariner/Mercury you'll overload it as these units are 10Kg heavier and your dinghy is a little too short. You really need a 280-300 metre rib or a 270 Walker Bay as these are considerably larger than the model number suggests. Both of these engines are physically the same size as a 15Hp and they can be uprated too, the Yam with a reed valve and the Merc with a new carb. Unfortunately, the 4 strokes are heavy and your dinghy will be very stern deep even with trim fins added.

If you have to select whose going to be able to drive it then it's probably not safe even with a kill cord.:ambivalence:
