I had the same boat MapisM, except i had the newer efi version of Yam40 - pic above on page 1 of this thread. I completely agree what you say above, but this boat was weird. Even with the engine trim fully in, the bow would lift way too much as you gun the throttle. It was ok with someone sitting in the bow, but not with 1 passenger. I've no idea why; it must have a funny hull shape or something.
Hmmm, weird. Aside from your idea of getting more trim-in (which makes sense), I would also try to increase the X-dim raising the whole o/b, if as I can imagine it's installed with the cavitation plate aligned with the keel.
Which should improve the stern lift also at speed, btw.

Anyway, in three sentences, can you give me the spec of the beautiful Ilmor engine/surface drive masterpiece in the picture above?
1) 8.4 litres, 90° V10 square, 725hp @ 6000+ RPM
2) all forged internals
3) dry sump outdrive
And if I had a 4th option, I'd throw in a sound which must be heard to be believed. Eat your earth out, supercharged V8s...

Yes, >X would be next. Easy to do becuase there were 5 or 5 bolt holes in the engine transom bracket, so it could be lifted ~40mm easily. I just never got around to it.

Masterpiece stuff. I am very familiar with the utterly beautiful sound of a V10 at 7000rpm, becuase I have had e60 BMW M5 as my daily driver since 2005. I have placed order/paid deposit for the new f10 M5 which is a fantastic car in many respects but it is v8 not v10 so the noise wont be there. I cannot decide whether to do the transaction and lose my v10 but i have any time until February 2012 to cancel (sorry for thread drift)

I agree. The F10 M5 V8 doesn't sound "right". Unlike the E39, which once heard is never forgotten. Impressive machine though - Enjoy. Apologies for further thread drift.

Have you actually heard the f10 M5? I haven't, though there seems to be a fleet of them in blue that have been made availalbe to magazine journalists in the last month or so

I had the E39 for several years before the e60 and while I loved the deep sound of the v8 I must say that the v10 sound at high rpm is altogether more special imho. A v10 is generally a pretty rare thing on the road anyway, and it sounds awful at slow idle, pretty ordinary at low rpm, but has a beautiful formula 1 ish sound at 6000rpm+ (which you have to do quite a lot with the e60 M5 becuase it doesn't develop much power at low rpm)

Thanks to jfm for putting up the pix. The motor *does* have fins tho not easy to see, perhaps in side-by-side pic of both dinks - which shows how very much smaller a 2.1 dinghy is that a 3.6m.

The suzumar is a foot shorter than the 2.5 on the video so you pretty much sit in the bows and kerump vroom leap neeeee kerump etc etc and u have gotta slow down vair carefully else the gianty wash will swamp the thing...

Here's a comparison.

What do you think?

E39 = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfF3dKA9Pxw&feature=related

F10 = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6gFCB0gQ_o

F10 in action = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6t_WC0HTaI&feature=related

I too haven't heard one in the flesh yet, but if this is anything to go by the classic BMW V8 sound just ain't there.

Thanks Questor (and sorry for FD but it's vaguely relevant imho!)

I kinda see your point. I loved the depth of the e39 sound and btw I still get a regular fix because my brother still has my old e39 with 200+k on it now. But I reckoned the f10 sounded ok enough too on those vids. I say "enough" becuase I'm not really a suercar nut and prefer boats 100x to cars, so for me the f10 M5 will be just a nice quick daily driver but I can live with a few imperfections on it. I still think, just imho, that the more technical screaming machinery noise of the V10 @6500+ sounds way better than a V8

Will can you post more pics of the outing during which you got your avatar photo. Looks like a lot of fun :D

The video wasn't really that great, shame I dont have pictures of my 7.2M rib completely airbourne ( even though it is possible- tried and tested ;) ) One in picture was 5.2M with a 70HP, just came off a big wave.

I know I'm in a minority but i think the last M5 (e60) was a great looking car. It also had a great interior with a beautiful minimalist dash. I also think iDrive is a brilliant invention, though i accept it takes a couple of months to get to love. I think Chris Bangle was a genius but, as i say, I know I'm in a minority here!

Just a wee drift further on this, sorry...

I agree on the looks of the e60. It took a while to get used to, but after eight years it still looks good. The funny part is that, and this is very much IMHO, cars have gotten to the point where there are no longer giant leaps of improvement on each model generation. The driving experience of the e60 wasn't THAT much better than that of the e39 (almost opposite, I would say). And based on an admittedly short test drive of F10, it wasn't THAT much better than the e60 either. Of course there are many reasons to upgrade, but paying silly (and because of the taxation here, I mean silly) money for a slightly better car is kinda putting me off it. Or maybe I'm just getting old.

Anyway, this is a boating forum so enough about cars...

And thank's for the OP for the hilarious post :)
