I am looking for information/literature on how to go about installing a 'converted' engine and sterndrive configuration into my Norman 20.
My thanks to Gordon for his offer to 'talk me through it', and to all others , especially about how to 'post' a topic!
Thanks ,
Den Moran

Probably the easiest engine to work with would be the ford xld. Loads of "kits" and bits around for it. I did have an article in one of the mags, but I don't know what I did with it.

Its not cheap though. All the bits and pieces will probably set you back 600-800 quid and thats without buying the engine to convert and any work that may be required. Give Forbsie a call, he's wrestling with one at the moment.

Hi Den.

Congrats on getting the thread up and running. I'm in the middle of marinising a Ford Escort 1.6 diesel (XLD416) to be attached to a Sonic 100 Outdrive. I've been sort of at it for months but keep chickening out coz I've never done the mechanical bits before. I'm hoping to have it finished by next week though. My kit cost me £1100 from ASAP but there will probably be stuff that I won't install, so yours should be less than this. The article that Barry talked about, he lent it to me but Boat Mart did a re-print of it last year, so either one of us can lend you that once I finish mine. With a bit of mechanical nouse, you can probably marinise an engine in a couple of days as opposed to my 6 months or so.

PM me with details of where you are and a phone number and I'm sure that we can offer lots of advice.

Gordon

They specialise in this kind of thing.
Other engine to consider is the old favourites - BMC 1.5/1.8 (Sherpa) or Perkins 4108 as these are cheap to pick up secondhand and will fit quite nicely into a Norman.
Due to the weight, you wont get much bigger than a 1.7Litre in there without a seriously low transom in the water.

Thanks Gordon,
I'm getting the hang of this now! Its really good of you to take the time and trouble-I must admit I could do with a wetnurse on this one!
The main problem is that I have a semi-displacement hull, and want to have a good match of engine type and stern drive. I am inclining towards Ford because of their availability and spares prices etc., and have taken note that you have one from an 'escort'. What other ford engines are suitable - to rate between 30-50 hop?
I am in Swansea, and my tel. no. is 01792-781904
Kind regards,
Den Moran

For the size and weight, the little ford will be just fine in the Norman. I think thy're rated at about 60hp anyway. The only problem I can see with using any of the other ford lumps is the size of the things. You could if you wanted a bit more power go the FSD transit route. But as with all these things the bigger you go the more its going to cost. The transit engine will give you around 75-100hp. Then you've got to look at the outdrive. Lancing will do various adapters to fit a lot of the volvo drives etc, or you can use the enfield, sonic.

What sort of use will you want out of the boat. Inland rivery stuff or coastal work?

I enquired at the local car breakers, a good condition Ford 1.6XLD costs about £350. Lancing do a full marinising kit for £590 plus about £200 for the adapter to match your drive. Go for one out of a relatively low mileage crashed vehicle.
This engine was used in plenty of small Ford cars and vans.
I don't know the reason but several people on this forum prefer the 1.6XLD to the later 1.8XLD, something to do with relianility I think.

Hi Den.

Sorry for the delay but I hope to be finished and ready for starting it up this week at which stage I'll send you the magazine. A lot of the photos have been printed back-to-front, so I'll also take some pictures of the completed engine and e-mail them to you.
