Greetings all. Firstly let me apologise if I have gone against protocol opening a new thread on this. This is my first post and I’m not up to speed on how this forum works.
I would be really grateful for some advice.
I have a 5hp 4-stroke Mariner (2002?). I use it on the Great Ouse and Cam. It has developed running problems. It stopped running last month and wouldn’t start, without considerable effort and time, passing while on the river. When it did start, as soon as it went in gear it would stall and then not start again. I have stripped the carb, new spark plug and removed all signs of old fuel. However, it is still a pig to start - 20 plus pulls - when it is running it is fine at low revs. However, when I increase the revs to full (in neutral) it dies. If I lower them in time it recovers.
I wondered whether there is an electric governor on these that prevents overrevving in neutral? It’s in a bin of water (for testing) and so I don’t know whether it does the same in drive as I don’t want the prop going that fast in just a bin. However, just before it broke down on the river it behaved in the same way when in drive (ie idling fine (when it would start) but dying as you increase the revs). Do I have to strip the Carb again? Any advice would be gratefully received.
