Mariner 4 stroke outboard

Having recently bought a new Mariner 4HP 4-stroke, I am having problems starting it. It can take anything up to 30 minutes to get it started from cold. Once started, within a reasonable period of time, it will start first time. I think that it is fuel starvation. Anyone else had a similar problem and knows of a remedy?

I have a Mariner 6hp fourstroke and it starts OK. It needs full choke from cold, or a small throttle opening (just above tickover revs) when warm. You need a good long hard pull though - extending most of the length of the cord. A short yank like you tend to use with a 2 stroke won't work. My engine is vvery economical - 4 hours per gallon when pushing a 23 foot yacht at 4.5 - 5 knots.

I have a Mercury 5HP 4 stroke (same mechanics as the Mariner) and it never fails to start. But it does need full choke for the first few moments, even in hot weather, and it does need a long pull on the starting cord. Have you checked for a good spark at the plug and that you are using plain petrol and not a 2 stroke mix?

Good luck

If the mariners are similar to yamaha 4/4's? ( some larger mariners are...) then.......I bought a new one....it wouldn't prime from the built in tank unless the fuel level was very high....at lower fuel levels it was impossible to start without sucking petrol through to the carb', the pump just wouldn't do it. ( although I can't say I tried for 30 mins !)

If the line to the carb still had fuel in.....no problem, otherwise no go.
