just been to get some more oil.. checked the other bottle and it says nothing about spec on it and most the the printing has worn off so cant tell make etc. i was given it with the engine so could be fairly old oil..
i'll run the engine this afternoon when i get back from work and find out where the impellor is.. hopefully behind the prop as taking the leg off sounds a bit daunting
regards nick

Agree ... the 100:1 recommendation is emissions based, not engine life based. My recommendations are
1. Mixture somewhere between 50:1 and 70:1
2. Keep an eye on the water flow. They have a reputation for furing up!
3. If you think there is any possibility it has been near horizontal after use (like laying down in the back of the car) always stand it up and run it within a few hours. 24hours with a trace of sea water in the engine and it's toast ... hundreds have been there before you with Mercury / Mariner 2 / 2.5's

I've used my Johnson Sailmaster (XL shaft) 4Hp (3.3 in new money) on a Bombard AX2 (started to strain transom when on plane) and Suzumar 265 no probs.

The Suzumar is fit for 6 or 8hp and has largest tubes in it's class so supports transom well.

Yours should be fine, just odserve transom / tube joint under full load.

Sorry! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif duff information and a 'senior moment'.
My outboard is a Yamaha 2, not a Mariner, but the mixture on the casing definitely says 1:100.
I would tend to agree with other posts about erring on the 'more oil' side if you're using for longer periods - you don't want engine failure any where near Southend Pier! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

just ran the mariner on the new oil at 50-1 and virtually no smoke so it must of been the oil at fault..

cleaned out carb and put in new plug and it revs much higher now...still not much water coming out of tell tale so may have to look at impellor at weekend i think...

I'd like to know when Mariner changed their recommended fuel/oil ratio. As per my earlier post, my booklet states 50-1 for the 2HP...... and after 14 years (with only 2 new spark plugs and 1 new water pump impellor needed) it's still going strong.

Funnily enough I've just installed an outboard bracket on the stern of my ancient Mirror Offshore and tried out my Mariner 2 on it (the first time it's been started in 10 years) .

I had exactly the same problem. Lots of smoke and an engine that would only run with full choke. WHen I thought about it I realised I had made a mistqake with the fuel and used a 5:1 mixture rather than a 50:1 - but hell, who can remember how to mix outboard fuel when you haven't done it for years.

I've had the same -little used - engine for 20 years - and am still trying to find reverse gear on it.
