Marine Traffic AIS

Here is goes:
1) install marinetraffic app and login. You can put your mmsi although not even required but increases accuracy of course.
2) click options->associate account with mmsi: "please do a 15minute navigation and when finished press this button"
3) on the server side match the naviagtion tracked with the app with the tracking done via ais. Bingo, login paired with mmsi.

Great. A system which makes it childishly simple for me to take control over the AIS data of any CalMac ferry or indeed any other vessel whose track I can see or predict.

Cant seem to get this quoting lark to work..
People seem to be confusing their radio transmissions? ais, train arrivals, gps, all data leading to information... as refueller has already pointed out.
Voice comms usually requires a license therefore often protected to a degree.
Ais is only transmitting data that you have chosen to transmit?
I could have my mmsi number only, have it completely blank, change the number to another , chose to add the boat name, length, etc. My ais has a comprehensive list of things that can be filled out such as exact measurements of the location of the ais antenna relative to the boat, its mounted height etc ... I can tell it that im underway, anchored etc. The type of vessel is denoted by some letters and the rest of the items are way beyond my understanding, but luckily a sheet is included to show what parts should be filled and with what figures..
If you dont fill in a mmsi it does the same as a dsc radio when you turn it on with a request box for mmsi number.
I presume the average ais contains mmsi, boat name and length? Im not sure how any of that information could be a worry to anyone when shown on a web site.
The history on marine traffic is interesting. When Uss john s macain and tanker Alnic mc collided off Singapore you could see the track of the tanker and it certainly appeared that the us ship turned across the bows of the tanker whilst trying to overtake..
Marine traffics tracking of the KNM Helge ingstad and tanker showed who went where...
Ais is a bit like using google, you have to agree to how it works and what it does, if not you are not obliged to use the services.

IMO is not happy with what MarineTraffic is doing with AIS..

Automatic Identification Systems (AIS)
Yes, but that was 16 years ago and it’s had all the effect of a toddler stamping its foot. Which suggests to me that most nation states in the IMO aren’t too fussed about Marine Traffic et al. The genie is out of the bottle and there’s no way to stuff it back in. For those seriously worried about their vessel data appearing on the web, only fill in the MMSI on your transceiver; that’s all that Marine Traffic will display.

There are a lot of ground stations now watching AIS. I don't have AIS transmit, but on balance think it is probably better to transmit more info than just the absolute minimum. I fully agree that if everybody had a transceiver the system would clog up in no time at all. Why do people object to where their AIS free- to- observe transmissions end up?
I have talked to an OOW on a car ferry and a friend who is a bridge officer from a cruise liner. They are obliged to transmit, but by and large they use radar and eyeballs to watch other shipping. Any AIS receiver is generally in a corner of the bridge under a jacket.
It is handy for small craft to watch big stuff, but less use the other way round. Unless they are the grey-funnel line , or drug (or other) running , most large craft remain visible,]
The genie is out and long gone...

When i go to Boulogne a certain photographer insists on taking & uploading pitures of my boat every visit I make. This irritates me & I havehad to email him & ask him to remove them.
A friends boat was photographed & it included a female crew whose presence may have been misinterpreted. Fortunately I managed to get it removed for him
I do feel that posting pictures without permission should not be allowed.
I do accept AIS positions being shown. My wife likes to know where i am & i find that useful if I forget to call.

I’ve also had “unauthorised” pictures of my boat appearing on the site and agree that it’s annoying. However, MT seem to respond fairly quickly in removing them when requested.

I wasn’t until recently aware of the satellite tracking option. The refresh rate can be several hours but not really a problem. You can pay for one vessel, 24 hour access at around £1. Very impressive and reassuring for shoreside family.

As a matter of interest, why? It really doesn't bother me if people take pictures of my boat - I'm flattered more than anything.

Quite simple really. The photographer claimed credit and the quality was poor. It’s happened to me twice. Both times, long lens with shakey hands ?. I do not believe that his additions would help search and rescue, for example, so I wanted them taking down.

I found I had pictures on my MarineTraffic profile though I never put them, they were taken and posted by one guy of Peniche marina staff, he said there is a sort of friendly contest in taking pictures of ships and boats and posting them in the site.

Speaking of funny contests, I discovered there is also a sort of group effort in posting pictures of every round degree coordinates location on earth; some of them are photographs of gps screens taken onboard ships in the middle of the ocean, helps in passing time I guess :)

If I recall correctly, there are only 7 lat/long land confluences in the entire UK ...... and one of them in a field about 2 miles away from my home.

There are plenty of photos taken from that spot on the web and, over the last 20 years, I've taken many visitors there. It's always a bit of fun watching everyone walk around in ever decreasing circles until their phone GPS reads numeral .000000 / numeral .000000 and then taking a screenshot. ;)

Its pretty neat when you sail from 000.00.000N to 000.00.000S.

With all due respect and no desire to start a fight, I still don't understand. If the photographer took credit then nobody would think you kept your boat deliberately blurry, so I can't see what harm it does you. If you google the registration of my classic Citroën you find a rather poor picture of me driving into a rally in Holland two years ago. It doesn't bother me.

As a matter of interest, what evidence did Marine Traffic ask for to link you to your boat?

No fighting from me, either ? Turning it on its head, what benefit is there in having a blurry, barely recognisable picture against my record when there’s already a sharp one, more helpful for identification? There are quite a few AWBeneteau sailing boats so it’s surely better to have a clear picture of mine on record ?

Next time she’s in Pt Bannatyne I’m sure you’d recognise her from my picture, probably not from matey’s.

I honestly can’t remember what MT asked for to confirm ownership. I don’t recall it being onerous.

As soon as my boat departs and arrives in a port, I get an email from MT with location info. All very helpful.

Should you ever visit Ceuta, the Spanish enclave in Morocco, photos of the yachts in the marina are taken every day. By the customs peeps. Its not unusual in Spain.

Just sayin.

Thanks. It seems sensible for MT not to clutter up their servers with dud pictures, at the very least.

Is that a subscription service? I got AIS partly because it would have eased my mind slightly during a North Channel crossing in fog (we heard two or three Big Things which we never saw) and partly because my other half, who does not sail, likes to follow us around online - knowing and despite the gaps in Marine Traffic coverage.

It the my fleet option if I remember correct, can track just a few boats, small cost if I recall, about £12 per year for standard option, just checked get 30 emails.30 txt per month
