Marine Gas BBQ\'s

I'm considering of buying a small gas BBQ to put on the back of the transom this season and after a bit of advice please.

Does anyone have one of these ???. Our boat is only 24ft and is of GRP construction, so I'm a bit worried about the amount of mess/flames created (even though it will be hanging off the back).

Are they any good? Or is my illusion of being anchored in Poole Bay with a large steak on the go just an impossible dream ???

A company called MAGMA seem to be one of the only suppliers and whilst they're not too expensive in the USA they seem to start at about £175 here ! So has anyone found a suitable Gas BBQ in a campling shop / DIY store ??

Hope you can help !

Thanks............ Andy

hi andy, welcome etc.

I assume you have nio gas on board already? - as otheriwsie of course cooking in the existing burners (tho in cabin) is likely best option.

The sailyboats do have these, even charterboats and they have the low tech non-gas option, so it must be (in their opinion) damn safe if even charter twonks (like me!) can use them. I'd get one of these, as a "during the season only" attachment as they will rust to bits. I bet a decentish one could clamp to rear somewhere (no grp!) so all the flames and mess (with bows into wind at anchor) will be off the back end. Certainly sounds a load cheaper than 175 quid, for which i spect a local restaurtant wil cook steaks and bringem out to you on a rib? But would I have a bbq on a petrol boat? Proably not...

We go ashore, and use those disposable foil ones. Put 'em out in the sea, then throw them in a bin, or put it on board for disposel later. Saves waiting for gas (or charcoal) BBQ to cool down.

<font color=blue>Have a look in the West Marine Catalogue, I bet they do them there for a sight less than £175.
Personally I have no experience of hanging one off the back. Certainly the laws of nature will direct smoke, grease and flame away from the boat because at anchor your craft will automatically point into the window, for my part tho' there's no way I would want to give any flame a chance on my boat.

I have a Magma gas grill on a petrol boat which I've used very frequently for 12+ years. Never a problem. There are several types of fitting available, such as for handrail, fishing rod holder, swim platform, beach etc. Ours fits on the swim platform so I can cook while sitting at the transom door and watch the sun go down through the smoke:) Seriously, they are great pieces of kit, (they are stainless steel, don't rust, but they do get a bit black with use!)) and we would not be without ours. See it for $160 at http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wc...001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&productId=49613
I recommend you get the one without brickettes - it has a flame "spreader" in it and saves you having to keep putting the b-kettes back after storage.
