Is it to keep a boat afloat or ashore because Vilamoura is very expensive. Theres a much cheaper alternative at both Olhao and Faro if you want to lift out
to keep in dry dock for 6 months and in water for season , vil /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gifamoura is very expensive close to £8000.00 , for a short season, an advice appreciated.
Try marina formosa in Olhao (they are also opening yard shortly in Faro). You will find them much cheaper. Good facilities, you can stay on your boat, very secure and only 20 minutes drive to the airport
Very good yes but very expensive. Five year fixed price contract was quoted to me last week at all in 10k per year for 13M.
In fact apart from Oranges and Lenons all of the Algarve is more expensive than UK including housing.
4.7K (pounds or euros), for 9 months from 16 Sept 09 to 15 June 10. If you liveaboard, or have long summer holidays, you can go on a trip, or anchor at Alvor or Portimao for the summer.
I'm in bruces yard in faro, right under the flight path, 13 euro/m/month + iva 22.5% haulout cheap by algarve standards.
Marina at olhao is difficult to get into, it seems to be locals only and theres a long waiting list for berths. Faro pool / canal is a good anchorage as is the one at Colatra.
Vilamoura is very nice but south coast england prices (as are all marinas on the algarve, though they are feeling the pinch at the moment they wont drop their prices.)
Anchorage in the river at portimao possible but there was dredging there wich restricted anchoring and the marina got the local plod to move people on last year as they were running on empty, though it seems to have been resolved, as I spent a week there in september.
Alvor is a possibilty, lovely village tortuous river to the anchorage, one eye on depth and one hand on the reversing lever job.
I'm off there tommorow early morning. PM me if I can help.
Phantom Lady have you any up to date info on Olahao? let me know if you have, it might be worth a trip up to the port office to see if there are any berths.
appreciate all posts , so in the opinion of the panel , best place to moor 34ft sports cruiser for store 6 months & berth for the season, over to you. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Brucies yard for ashore, easy access to airport and faro's a nice town, then use marinas at your discretion and financial capability, anchor off in Portimao, Alvor, Faro, Colatra, Tevira and Guardiano when possible, just remember the three months of summer cost as much as the remaining 9 months in algarve marinas,
We stayed with some friends last year in Ayamonte, it has a very nice Marina, and only 45 mins from faro, but in Spain. Lovely beaches, and nice golf courses if you are into that, as well as a very nice Town..
I know its extremely difficult to get into Olhao marina - they do take people but what criteria they use only they know. However, I do know people who have got in by being persistent so if youre really determined it might be possible. And its very cheap. It looked pretty full though when I was down there last week. You can always anchor off the marina between the two sets of pontoons - people stay there for months on end in the winter (and its free).
The boatyard I was recommending to the original poster was the marina formosa which is a different place. Its between the fishing port and the national park office on the eastern side of Olhao. A friend of mine has been living there on his boat this winter and reckons its very good and cheap (though they are starting to increase their prices now they are getting known).
The owner is also shortly opening a new yard in Faro to rival Bruces for his customers who want to live aboard on the hard long term.
One of the advantages I think the Olhao yard has over the Faro one is that you are within five minutes walk of a town centre, supermarkets, lively social scene, ferries to the islands, superb markets etc
