Thinking of an extended cruise next year, about four or five months. Debating on whether to go to holland and the Baltic or to South Brittany.

Does anyone have data on marina charges in either area?

Many thanks in advance

S.W. Brittany : about 1/2 - 1/3 of Solent prices ??

I pay approx £950 pa (x-rate € =£0.69) for a 30' boat incl. water, electricity and showers with free reciprocal arrangements at about a dozen other ports.

This is at Locmiquélic (Lorient) which is extending its marina to create about 250 new berths for next year.

As a general rule the further west you go the cheaper it is.

Don't know about rents at the other places but I am sure the climate is nicer in Brittany.

2 years ago, between £3-6 per night for 12.5 meters, electricity 0.60p per night.
Many pontoon moorings free in city areas & good deals for a weeks moorings in the more scenic areas. Most expensive night was £6.50 in Hoorne marina - but great facilities, not bad for a big boat.
Where, Holland of course.

I kept my boat in Loctudy ( South Brittany) for three years up to Summer 2002. Great marina in a delightful spot with excellent cruising grounds nearby. Around £950 pa for a 9.9m yacht in the last year. Now £3500pa in Portsmouth!

Assuming your cruising all summer I imagine you'll be moving from marina to marina rather than staying at one and getting a greater discount.

We've been cruising between Honfleur and Trebuarden this summer. Average overnight prices are about £11/night. Electricity is free but you'll have to add about £1/person/shower for showers.

Some marinas offer a discount. In Treguir they offered (without being asked please note) 3 nights for the price of 2. Some others offered an extra 2 nights free if you stayed for 5 even in high season.

As far as extended stay is concerned. We met an English chap in Treguir who berthed his boat there; a 31 footer (ish). It cost him £570/yr INCLUDING free elec, free showers and a free lift out/in!

It was also the best town we visited!

Hope this is helpful.

Generally, in Brittany, the most we paid for a 31 footer was about 14 euro, some are cheaper. A few have latched onto the notion that we pay a lot more in the UK and have pushed prices up. You can save by paying for a longer stay even if you dont intend staying the full term.

Electricity is generally included. Showers are rarely included and will cost between 1 and 2 euro a time.

Bouys and trots are chargeable but we wern't troubled for payment at all last year.

Cheers

You can find cheap ports in Holland and Brittany away from major marinas.
How long an extended season? Baltic has great but short summers, you are pushing your luck after mid August for the best warmest weather - but its so good this is no reason not to go. Nigel Luther would the chap to give details.

There is a big article in the recent edition of PBO on Southern Brittany. The headline seems to say it's expensive and crowded, though I've yet to read it in detail.

Up to date information for South Brittany :
Marinas are not so crowded except may be 14 July to 15 August.
For your 37 footer (LOA - 11m49 Beam - 3m85 ?) in the Mecca of Sailing,
La Trinité sur Mer : it'll cost 17 € / day & 335 € / month in April, June & Sept.
28 € / day & 154 € / week high season.
Others are cheaper and there are plenty of anchorages for nothing !
If you read French, good information on : www.baie-de-quiberon.com
Or call on me, I went almost everywhere from Brest to Arcachon ...

Hi Chris

I think Holland and teh Baltic are fantastic. Marina charegs are very cheap, especially Teh Baltic and just about everyone speaks English. Drink is cheap except in Sweden, Finland and Norway. Loads of Marinas. I have sailed in many places but prefer Teh Baltic and the calm places of Holland.

I can confirm the Baltic ...... go east lad - is cheap and very good. I keep a boat in Tallinn, Estonia and it costs me about 1/3rd of UK - AND I get electric / water !!!! AND security guard on the gate - not a silly pass-coded swing gate !!
That is in the Olympic Yacht Hbr as well !

Marina prices in Holland pretty much follow the supply and demand principles. Coastal marinas like Stellendam, Scheveningen, Ijmuiden, Texel, charge the most, roughly 30 Euros for a 34 ft boat. Inland can be far cheaper, last week we spent roughly 12 Euros or less per night between Blankenberge (Belgium) and Hellevoetsluis. Moving north up the coast, your options are more limited but we had very reasonably priced nights at Delfzeil, Nordeney, Brunsbuttel, Kiel and Cuxhaven last year. Inland in the canals the prices are very low or free at alongside berths.

In the Danish Baltic we never paid more than about 10 or 12 pounds per night in a three week cruise. Excellent sailing, good facilities and very pleasant weather. All of the rates quoted above include electricity.
