Does anyone have have a set of solent (or further afield) waypoints for use with Garmin's mapsource charting software that uses the Bluechart CDs?

I have seen all the arguments about not trusting other peoples' waypoints and the possibility of everyone running into each other in fog, but it strikes me as being a good check to help me avoid mistakes. You can also easily confirm a waypoint by plotting its position on the Bluechart. Mapsource uses a proprietory .mps file so this could be a good place to start.

All this is needed because I have a new 176c that has so far only been used on the South West coast of Florida and when navigating to Arthur Woods' house. Programming in waypoints is a doddle when you are on holiday and have plenty of time, and anyway, I Now want to relaunch boat and try it out in the Solent.

PS I know some of you feel that GPS in the Solent is a waste of time but it is a another nice toy /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

You can have all of mine. Got loads of them! Guess we just need a way of transferring them. Solent and loads of routes to and from Weymouth, Salcombe, Poole, around IoW and to Chichester, Mercury etc etc etc just about anywhere you want to go for miles around! <g>

Thanks for the offer.

The only way I know how to get routes and waypoints from your GPS is to 'register' your GPS to my Mapsource software. This is not a very good idea.

I suppose that it may be possible to go through third party software, e.g. Oziexplorer, but I was hoping that I could simply upload someone else's .mps files.

Now if you'd have bought the Bluechart CD none of this would be a problem!

Nice idea, I was wondering about a thread for just such swaps?

Anyway, my copy of Mapsource has an option to export. The file can then be eddited in MS Excel (which is very handy) and import them back for uploading to the GPS itself. Does this sound likely?

I've been investigating this a bit and have now managed to download waypoints, tracks and routes from the 176c into Oziexplorer and vice versa. Not so simple as downloading a .mps file but it should work.

Now all I need to do is to persuade Brendan to lend me his unit for a couple of days. Fortunately I do not have an autopilot so some of Brendan's more wild and wooly rides can be avoided.

That was pretty much my thinking originally, waypoints and routes can be exported and imported through a variety of chart software.

If I install OzE, I should be able to import waypoints and routes, then export and email to you?!

Wotcha mean wild and wooly rides? Been flat calm everytime we've been out!

Ive got two GPSs registered to my Mapsource so not sure how I can get to yours unless its possible to put my card into your GPS and then retain the waypoints.

I dunno here but let me know if you think I can help you

If you have Mapsource then you must be able to save all of your waypoints and routes to a .mps file. If you e-mail a copy of this file to me then I should have all of your waypoint info. If you save the tracks as well then I will be able to see where you have been and when, so you'll have no secrets.

OK Jon I will have a go.

I will get my stuff from boat on Sunday

Is creating mps file part of the mapsource package?

....and I don't think my tracks will make particularly interesting reading
