I know nothing about MAN engines. Anyone got any experience or opinion on MAN engines and this model in particular which I believe was available in 1050, 1200 and 1300hp ratings? What about service? Is that readily available in Europe?

Hi Mike. I have 2 D2848 Man engines in Ocean Tigress. They are V8's at 680 hp each. I have had them from about 800 hours and they now have 1850 hours on each. Always found they to be sound and reliable. have had some starting problems (very smokey) in the very cold weather but it has proved to be a solenoid failure problem that holds in the cold start/glow plugs. Service used to be carried out by the main dealer but proved to be very expensive, now down by Col of this parish. Very easy to service and providing you follow the schedule have found them to be very reliable. (Hope i don't regret saying that:rolleyes: but I'm going to touch wood as well) Spares are also readily available and only averagely expensive. Well they are fitted to a boat.:)

Service in Mallorca is first class and there is a choice of official agents.

Have 2 x D-2848 LE 423 V8 900 fitted but only 400 hours so far.

Only problems have been sensors (2) but they have now been superseded.

Never had any smoke problems.

mike,

was it finally so difficult to repair the upholstery in the cabin that you're opting for a new boat?
:p

[obviously not got a clue on the engines, would wait for the two pauls to comment...]

What's a typical service cost for these?

Hi Jimmy,

Annual service for both engines is about Euro 5200.00 plus IVA (Vat).

Service is carried out by official Spanish agent to a very impressive standard.

After the service Engineers have completed their work the owner of the Company attaches a lap-top to the engine electronics and the boat is taken for a sea trial.

The readings are then sent to MAN in Germany (via Barcelona) so that a complete history is held on each engine.

Thanks Doug, that's very interesting. Do you stick to the main agent as a point of policy, or is it just that there aren't any independents for engines of this calibre (and, I guess, relative rarity cf my volvo's for example).

Cheers
Jimmy

Out of interest doug, how much is labour and parts split, that doesn't sound bad for a boat of that calibre , I'm comparing it to a recent post about servicing two cat 3116 engines in Palma from the local agent, from memory it was about the same price yet your engines are in a different league.

Thats quite reassuring as its also a similar cost to the cost of servicing my existing Cat 3196 engines. I thought the MAN engines would be more expensive being larger

Always stick to the main agent as a point of policy Jimmy, but there are plenty of very good independants for all makes.

Aquatom of this parish is well thought of but I have never used him myself.

I don't ask for any labour parts breakdowns Paul so cannot assist.

All work on the boat is done by or through Steve Hookings of Marina Estrella in Portals.

In case anyone is interested they are now the Azimut agents for all of Spain.

A common misconception Mike.

I often read that they are troublesome engines, that are expensive to repair, and parts very expensive.

From what I am told by Sunseeker, MAN are the most popular choice of engine in the smaller ranges.

We run several makes of lorrys from our factory and have used Volvo, Mercedes, MAN and Iveco.

The lorrys of 7.5 tonne and above are kept for 7 years and do approx 800-1000000 kilometers in that period.

For servicing and repair costs the Volvos have always been the most expensive and unreliable, with the Mercedes being the next cheapest and very reliable, and MAN and Iveco both being the cheapest on servicing and spares and very reliable.

We are told by many hauliers that Iveco are the poor mans lorrys but we find them first class.

I know that this cannot transfer direct to marine engines but of course all marine engines (with mild exceptions) are based on lorry engines.

Should point out that jfm is not keen on MAN but have no further information why.

5,200 euro + VAT seems expensive to me for your Cats, assuming they're similar age/power to my D12's. Main dealer SoF price for normal service on mine is 3,800 euro + VAT. Parts are about 1,700 euro, oils 500 euro, rest is labour.

Only the V12 model that I think is called LE406 and is now in 1360hp form (was previously in 1200hp). Too many people i know (tcm in his Leopard, a friend with a 2008 'hattan70 and another guy I know vaguely in Antibes) have had the heads off and major rebuild work needed on these engines and various commentators describe them as soft.

They have an annoying feature in that despite all that German know how they still can't seem to buy white paint that doesn't turn beige when it gets warm. Every other engine builder has no problem on this score, but MANs all turn beige, grrr!

€5400 ex tax sounds very expensive, off the cuff. I'll have to dig out my papers but iirc my 2011 service on a pair of Cat C32 by a main Cat agent in France was quite a bit less than that

Thats what I've been quoted by main Cat dealer in N Italy but I dont use them except for the annual oil analysis. As it happens I source the parts in the UK from Finning and get the boatyard to do the work. Cost to me is about £1500 parts + €750 labour + oils

Well I always suspected Cote D'Azur boating was dirt cheap but this and Doug's costings prove it :D

Yeah, yeah. I've found there's a big variation in cost between official and non official rates. Italian boatyard charges me €35/hr which I'm guessing is lower than SoF? In Croatia, labour cost is about €20/hr but competence level is lower too

we have two volvos fh12 that have covered 1.4million ks hand are still going strong and working full time on 44tonnes and have been trouble free other than sevice and some sensors

we run 4 in totalunits with these engines latter 2 are fh13

this is one of the reason why i bought a boat with these in the problem was with 9litre engine which i wouldnt touch with a barge pole
