we run 4 in totalunits with these engines latter 2 are fh13

this is one of the reason why i bought a boat with these in the problem was with 9litre engine which i wouldnt touch with a barge pole

Terry, I never meant to infer that all Volvos are unreliable.

We run 3.5 tonne, 7.5 tonne and 18/20 tonne dropside lorrys.

The 3.5 tonne ones are Iveco Daileys which we run for 2 years or 400,000 miles and are without doubt the best trucks in this range we have ever used.

7.5 tonne models have been the old Ford Cargo which was simple and a great vehicle, and MAN and Iveco which we consider to be equal and have no preference.

18/20 tonne have been Iveco, Volvo and MAN. As said the Volvos were problamatical to say least, but the auto box on our existing MAN lorry has had its problems whereas the Ivecos have been a great success.

We have no alliegence to any one make and I would suggest that there are not any bad lorries currently available, it is just that some are a little bit better than others. Nothing much in it either way.

There is not a lorry manufacturer that has got a range where all models are perfect, and jfm's post that his reservations on MAN marine engines refered to one engine size only illustrates the point.

I do not know how old you are or if you remember the 7.5 tonne lorry that Volvo brought out to compete with the Ford Cargo, but here I say without any doubt that the Volvo was the biggest load of absolute **** that was ever put on the market.

No manufacturer ever gets it right all the time.

As an aside I consider your Volvo Tractor units to be the very best vehicle currently being offered, but we do not have a use for artics.

Mike are you registered with Finnings Partstore? http://www.finning.co.uk/onlineservices/index.asp?appname=PartStore

I just tried but you need to have an account number with Finnings. Can someone like me have one, or is this trade only or what? It would be nice to order parts online
Don't know whether you can have a personal account with Finning. I buy parts through the company account we have with them. My point of contact is John Withey
jwithey@finning.co.uk. He deals with supply of marine parts so it may be worth calling him

I deal with John Withey, he's very helpful and reliable. CAT supply the public at the same prices as trade account customers.

I know nothing about MAN engines. Anyone got any experience or opinion on MAN engines and this model in particular which I believe was available in 1050, 1200 and 1300hp ratings? What about service? Is that readily available in Europe?

a opinion yes,
and a tiny bit of experience,

I'm really pleased with the two old MAN engines in BA,
actually for me the preferred choice for the arguments you asc about,
mine are not the same model, but older V12 engines
(but still a very similar base engine block)
and touch wood, still perform good after 22y and 2600hrs.

the base engine is a similar engine you find everywhere in Truck's, lorry's, Busses, ...
the parts are easy available and cheap, I buy direct from the benelux spare part center.

engineers who have experience on MAN's are generally available,

At Mets I spoke with the German guy's,
When I asked about my "doubts" about some for me "unknown" MAN service guy's in SOF and perhaps non correct pricing,
they explained they have engineers travelling under supervision from the German office,
with a Van, full of measering stuff, for testing / inspecting the engines
(measuring injector performance , looking with a camera in the cylinders, ......)
or they can point me to authorised and respected service centers....

If you look in the med pilot book, you will find the most Volvo and MAN service centers (especially France)
At the time when choosing for a Canados, I asked my Croatian friend / boat owner and boat lover,
and he answered that in Croatia service for MAN and Volvo is generally available
less for Cat and MTU, and DD he didn't know

There are (very few) examples of issue's with MAN's, but I heard also freightening stories from issues with other brands ...
I have no clue about numbers, but it believe that MAN has a very big share in the 60ft-80ft pleasure boat segment.
