Mainsail Headboards

Nearly all the boats I have sailed have more than one hole in the mainsail headboard.
I have always shackled the halyard through the hole at the top nearest to the mast.
Does anyone know what the other holes are for, or when the should be used ?

Some mastheads have a double sheave arrangement so that the main halliard downfall is further from the mast.
