Well, axtually, it sounds more like the fishermen failed to see the Prince Madog. Which surprises me as it is quite big really!

Beaumaris ILB had 4 shouts today!
The Mad Dog one, plus 2 MAYDAYS in the Strait and a windsurfer in trouble off Conwy.
The BBC report baffles me a bit Rushie.
'It is not known what boat they were on but they did not go in the water'

Possibly a rubber rib? Fast & and would just bounce off if it hit the P Mad Dog, leaving the crew in a bruised heap in the bows? The average reporter wouldn't know a raggie from a stinkpot anyway.

keeping it short and sweet, fishing at anchor about 400yds N/E of menai pier, the research vessel 'prince madog' came steaming towards us.................and just kept on coming,the skip obviously didnt see us and after lots of screaming he turned, but he was only 50yds away! much too late, he caught us with the back end and we went flying.shat myself bigtime!!! really thought that was it for me, scariest moment of my life, still a bit trembly now! big thanks to Beaumaris RNLI and ambulance service for quick and helpfull service, two of us were hurt in the impact but glad to be breathing!

Scary stuff, I'd have upped anchor and scarpered as soon as I heard her engines starting up. Glad there were no fatalaties.

Yikes, that is scary!
If that's true, Journo's are well down to their usual standard - location was reported wrongly, PM hit them rather than the report which suggests the opposite.
Loads of little open mobo's like Microplus etc anchor in the Straits fishing & really are vulnerable to wash & bigger ships. PM is in & out of there all the time, not much room to manouvre either.
Just glad they are OK now.

Must be a rich yottie. All boaters are rich...apparently.
But reading your report, I wonder if the they had a anchor ball hoisted, because PM could claim that he thought they would drift out of his way or the insurance company to wriggle out of a claim.

Why do you think they are now saying that the fishing boat hit them. And, got the journalist to report it that way round.
No problem therefore with MAIB or insurance. They hope.

I meant that the fishermen should report it to MAIB in case Prince Madog forgot.
The journalist probably didn't have a clue, so probably nothing malicious in what was reported. I've never known anything where I had any inside knowledge to be reported correctly.
Having been involved in the occasional racing bump I can say that people try to concoct ridiculous stories after a collision and usually shoot themselves in the foot. Not saying that there has been any attempt to do so here, in fact I suspect the inaccuracies are probably down to the press.
Still, there's a lot of angling boats that anchor around our coasts and if MAIB do a fair report it could be useful to quite a few people.

I did read it. It said they were at anchor. In which case they should have been showing a ball, unless they are under 7 metres in length.
But if they were amateur anglers, then it was probably a Warrior under 7Metres.

Re-reading post 7 again, it says "2 of us were hurt" which suggests it could have been one of the charter boats with several anglers on board.

A long time ago I was sailing down the Hamoaze with the lugger and saw a small square fronted motor boat weaving up the river towards me so just held my course, they then weaved directly in front of me just as I spotted the piece of string leading down to the water from their bow! Head on collision, no damage but the 2 anglers fell over. They were a bit cross until I explained they had every appearance of being underway!! (That was the only time I've ever seen anyone anchored in the fairway right in front of the dockyard).

Well, I can see the issue, Haydn.
Anchored in a channel, with a stream running which produces a bow wave & boat sheering about as if being driven. Anchor warp would be small and hard to see & relative speeds are hard to judge when approaching head on.
It does illustrate the difficulties of "standing on" only to find that one isn't the stand-on vessel a little too late. Thanks for sharing it Tamar.
