Check along the sides of the keel with the back end of a chisel and listen, tap, tap:And look for evidence of grounding and grp repair...
Its an enclosed steel keel so getting any water out is a pita,(compressed air, drilling holes etc)
Thanks for your replies, sounds encouraging;hopefully I can persuade the owner to take me for a sail in the ria there is normally a nice brisk breeze in the afternoon which should give a good indication to sail carrying and stability.Of course the outstandi ng problem of whether the toilet facilities will meet swmbo specification is paramount!!!!!

Grand boat, sailed a friends a lot in 70ish, very forgiving, sailed well, we used to set it up steering it,s self with the jib sheets very often, I can,t remember enough to comment on surveying type details, but a very nice kindly boat. Good Luck, Bill.
Thanks.I am looking forward to seeing the boat, hopefully I can pursuade the owner to go for a trip roud the ria;although this week end is definatly winterish!!!

Absolutely Mogy, thats why I went from 44ft to 32ft, wasn,t being derogatory, another suprising feature is the space in the Rowan, nice accom in 22ft. Hope it goes well tomorrow. Bill.
Well,I would say interesting.I saw the owner going aboard about an hour before our scheduled meeting.I arrived on time and he appeared ten minuites later saying that he had not seen the boat for 3 months......good start!!!!The ooutside is good for an old MAB.The interior is rubbish with most of the components like stove ,starter motor et in plastic bags. The bilge is a bit dubious with some oily water....lots of work. The engine a hand start SOLE started ok as there are no electrics. The owner voluntered a trip out.The next step is to show the wife ,although the touilet department is ....lacking.The price is too high but not offering to buy until we have a good look.My main concern is the bilge and possoble ingress of water ito the keel
you have just reminded me of something - my father had one of these for about 12 years and was very comfortable sailing her single handed in the Bristol Channel. Not fast but good and chunky.
She had bilge plates in addition to the long keel, so that she would dry out standing upright on the tidal mooring.
One stormy night she didnt settle very well and ended up with the mooring chain wrapped round one bilge plate causing damage to the hull. When the tide came in next, water gushed in through the damage with obvious consequences.
She was fully restored thanks to the insurance company, but my sister reckoned it was the only time in her life that she saw Father in tears.
The one you are looking at may not have bilge plates at all, but worth investigating, just in case.
Thanks for that,Iam gong to have to do alot of imaginative picture making to persuade her indoors that there are possibilities....then persuade the owner that his boat is really not worth what he is asking.....
