I have one of these old units. It came with the boat. Don't rely on it and it's a bit of an old gadget. However, in the last couple of weeks two very noticable things have happend.
1. It takes much longer to lock and give a lat and long (ignoring whether it is accurate or not).
2. It used to show a chart. There is an old Navionics card within, no idea how old that is. Now in the vast majority of power ups it does not show a chart. Again leaving accuracy aside. I've been through the manual which I find a bit heavy in truth. I've searched hi and low in the settings on the device and also noted that the date setting seems to change sometimes, but always back to something around 20 years ago.
I seem to recall that someone once told me the set is no longer supported with software upgrades and for now I don't have ££££s to go shopping for a new ones. Short of chucking it in the harbour, does anyone have any thoughts or expeience of what's going on with this old bit of kit. If I can get it to work properly I'd rather like to.
Many thanks indeed.

I would guess that the chart card has become corrupted.

If you remove the card and a GPS lock is obtained quickly then that would tend to prove this. However it is not disproved if the unit is still slow in obtaining the GPS lock, as the slow acquisition could be because the plotter stores the GPS almanac on the card and, without it, must wait for12 or 24 minutes for the almanac to be transmitted.

I have the 3500 which uses same internals except antenna.

Slow to lock ?? You need to leave it powered on for couple days literally to allow the 'almanac and data' be updated .... this is usually when a plotter has been unused for long period or had corruption ...
No map ? Probably corrupt card ..... if you go to menu and disable navionics .... do you have the no detail world shown ?

Can you display sats page ... other non chart pages ok ? If not then it may be you are now suffering Lowrances famous failed screen ..usually preceded by a period of flickering screen at times until finally like my 3500 .... it just doesn't fire up screen ... all else works .. but without screen its useless. There is sadly no fix if thats it.

I replaced mine with Onwa KP30A .......

Few things in this. I'll check. Thanks.

Another gotcha of the Lowrance with Navionics is that it splits the coverage into geographic areas. You must select the correct area in the menu. If the plotter is located in another area, the screen is blank. It puzzled me for a time when I upgraded from the Lowrance chart to Navionics.

Never noticed that .... then again - I never used Navionics in mine ... Lowrance Charting was good enough for me.
