Lost rudder in mid-Atlantic

Just wanted to say thanks to all 3 of you for keeping this thread alive with updates of Egret's progress. We had a slightly fraught W/E crossing earlier this year ourselves, from Florida, so understand the pressures a major incident can bring with it! But it seems the crew of Egret are tenacious and competent and I've enjoyed (well you know what I mean) reading of their progress as well as their blog.

Yes please update with the final chapter and pass on my good wishes for a passage safely completed even though I don't know them personally. Safe sailing to you also Phanakpan, I'm about to start reading your blog!

I've also been following their progress and keeping fingers crossed, however have little to add!
 
UPDATE

The latest position (fix) for Patrick and Amanda aboard "Egret" as of 29 December 2011:

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 14° 21' 11.91"N . . . 060° 03' 04.37"W

In the past two days, "Egret" has travelled 200nm and still progressing westwards on a course of 278°T. This is the latest report as I missed the HF Net this morning and I suspect their next report will be of a safe arrival in St Lucia? As reported above by Pip, they have already arranged a tow into the marina. :)

Brilliant! Hope the repairs won't be too troublesome and the crew can start relaxing and enjoying the Carib lifestyle.

Could we round this very satisfactory story off by a definitive account of how they managed it.

A description of what they tried and what worked and what didn't would be both interesting and helpful to anyone who found themselves in a similar predicament.

How did they manage it when the previously much talked about loss of rudder (big Dehler I think) led to the boat being abandoned?

If at all possible I'd be interested to see photos of what remains of the failed rudder, especially any showing the lay-up. Also the surveyor's report.
 
Good to follow this thread and see it all end safely and WITHOUT calling out every Tom, Dick and Harry to help them physically..
Well done to them, doing it the way it used to be done, on their own:)
