Lost fuel deck filler cap

I've lost my fuel deck filler cap over the side... a Maxi 84, so I'm presuming a Swedish original part (?) Any ideas what the thread would be? (It is beyond me to work this out by looking at the remaining deck fitting) Would a Roca part work?

with a tape measure showing the diameter, and if possible the pitch of the thread? Taking an impression of the thread onto something like plasticene or chewing gum can help to measure it.
you could use paper and pencil like you would if doing a brass rubbing.

Once I had calmed down I headed back to the old girl. Here are some pictures, hopefully they may prove useful. Checking the water deck filler, it seems they are the same thread. Last two pictures. As I am more worried about water in the diesel than rain/seawater in one of the water tanks, I have put the water cap on the diesel for now & patched over the water filler.

You will find fuel caps and fittings in any chandler. Make sure you give them the size of hose.

Looking at the design of your water filler cap it appears to be a Plastimo part Plastimo Water Deck Filler S/S D51mm 2 inch (P48706)

That appears to be a variant of this.

38 mm and 50 mm are very common and there are plenty of options.

By including locking caps the search will return more, even sold as the cap only.

Slight thread drift - I presume replacement caps for Sowester fuel fillers are unobtainable now - is it possible to buy temporary bungs in case of emergency?

I'm pretty sure that both my water and diesel fillers are Sowester, and replacement caps from Largs Chandlers last year worked just fine. A thread's a thread, and I suspect my new ones would work for the OP as well.

.. and there's always a possibility of thread drift, of course. If your filler cap turns into an anchor, that's why.

I believe the cap (maybe the whole filler) is made for Plastimo by Roca in Sweden. I had a devil of a job getting spares of these a few years ago and eventually sourced them (with forum help) from ASAP; Roca Flip Up Water Deck Filler Cap With Metal Ball Link Chain and Fuel Deck Filler Cap with a Flip Style Cap

This post I made in the relevant thread (Plastimo deck filler caps/plugs) has a serial number which may appear on the flip up handle of the OP’s remaining filler caps. If it does, then the Roca/plastimo part linked above should fit.

That the boat is Swedish might add confidence that the filler and the needed cap are Roca/plastimo.

My last piece of advice would be to buy two or three replacements so the problem doesn’t reoccur.

It would be handy if people would put their location details in the forum. Then one would know if it was worth giving the following reply:-
If you were local & could supply OD & thread pitch ( buy a cheap thread gauge) or better still the deck fitting, I could make a new plug from a plastic. It would do the job OK & it would be watertight. It is a standard turning task with a bit of milling on the top to make the grip .

But of course one might just as well buy the complete fitting as they are not expensive.

I would love to remove the diesel filler in my boat and replace it with a new one. Unfortunately it's in the middle of the cockpit floor and the tank is glassed in immediately below it, so replacing it would require, removing the engine and removing a significant amount of interior joinery to get at the glass which needs cut. Not Chuck Paine's greatest day. The yard just laughed when I asked if they coul ddo it while replacing the engine. So replacement plug it is, and if the rest fails I shall probably have to give the boat away and buy another.

Well look on the bright side. The way things are heading ( political - sorry mods) - living in Scotland- you might be able to import a boat from Europe without paying VAT if you can hang on for a while
But do not come any further south than the Solway firth in the west or Marshals caravan site on the east, or we will make you stump up £'s
