lost cover

on wednesdaythe 27th my boat was moved from topsham in devon,in the process my outboard motor cover was lost,dont ask me how but im now looking for a cover for a 6hp silva could any of the wise men on this forum please advise.and i know its a long shot but anybody in topsham find it thanks

Sorry to hear of the loss, and regret I can't help directly. However, it reminded me of sitting on my boat in a visitor's berth in a marina a couple of weeks ago - I was musing on why so many outboards have covers on. Why have a cover? I can't imagine rain or sunlight are going to affect the outboard, and they're built for damp conditions anyway. In fact, wouldn't a cover possibly have an adverse affect by hindering the free flow of air which keeps condensation at bay? Just wondering...

But, as I said, they're built for damp conditions. The Police and Fire Service RIBs moored in the same marina didn't have covers on their outboards, and they need top reliability.

I use a plastic gardening bag, courtesy of Lidl's - it works and is less attractive to would-be 'tea leaves'.

Oh, yes they do. My outboard, although very old, is very faded.

Still, makes it less nick-worthy, and doesn't affect it working.

i think i havent explained properly the cover is the actual lid that goes over the engine.the engine cannot work without it as water will get in

Sorry, thought you meant those canvas covers which so many people seem to put over their outboards, winches, compasses, steering wheels, etc.

I also had heard that canvass covers were not such a good idea as they keep any moisture trapped inside, this goes for winch covers too!
But if you use the modern alternative of breathable material then problem solved.

its the plastic cover for the actual engine that i lost.thanks for all your comments but does any one know were i could get the engine cover or is it called cowl for a silva 6hp outboard.

Cowling...

They're usually called "cowling", and I suppose your outboard is a Selva. You could try getting a quote from here.

I think the poster is refering to the engine cowel. Cant imagine how it could "accidentally" come off. Sounds like a five finger discount to me.

Try Bembridge outboards - they used to have a container full of scrap motors for salavaging bits off.
