The environment Agency in association with South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), today announced the biggest ever investment ever to be made in Flood defence in the UK for the Solent and South Coast of England. The scheme will incorporate a new south coast motorway and will in effect make the Solent non tidal. Included in the scheme will be a number of New Marina Develoments as well as substancial Housing and Commercial Developments.

The scheme will span from Worthing in the East to Weymouth in the West. It will consist of a new 4 lane Motorway and High Speed South Coast Rail link that will be built on the landward side of a new Sea wall some 40ft above HWCD. The new wall with incorporated motorway will start just to the west of Worthing along the south coast to Selsey Bill where it will then run in a line across to the eastern tip of the Isle of Wight at Bembridge and then along the south coast of the Isle of Wight to St Catherine’s and then along to the Needles. From the Needles it will run across Poole Bay to St Albans Head and will end just East of Weymouth. The scheme will have two 3000ft locks capable of handling the biggest ships in the world at the eastern end near the existing Nab channel. There will be 5 new pleasure craft locks, two near Bembridge, two near the Needles and one due south of Poole Harbour.

The New scheme is said to provide security against rising sea levels and flooding along the South Coast and will provide substantial development opportunities along the South Coast. It is also likely that a New mega Portland Harbour style scheme will be developed during phase 2 of the scheme in Poole Bay proving safe haven for both the Navy’s New Mega ships and commercial shipping.

The scheme will be funded in part by development of reclaimed land which will be used for both housing and commercial development as well as new Harbour dues which will be levied on Yachtsman and commercial shipping.

Gt Yarmouths white elephant (oops Outer harbour) is well advanced in construction. It is a little known fact that the result will be the degredation of Gorleston beach, but thats alright because there will be an endless stream of lorries replenishing the sand. I dont think there are any ferry operaters signed to operate a service yet though

Endless stream of lorries are not going to travel very far with the road infrastructure in Norfolk!! They will be lucky if they mange to get out of Gt. Yarmouth.
