Hi Folks,
just had a ginormous renewal demand from MDL.wont pay that much £5400!
Anyone suggest a good marina for a 8m fisher?
I like Birdham but wonder about access.
any ideas?

River Hamble above the A27 road bridge - Cabin Yard; Foulkes Riverside Yard; Eastlands. I pay £328 / month for 32' LOA at Foulkes, deep water 24 / 7 access, walk ashore, power and water present. I estimate 8m would be ~ £3,200

Id say that all the marinas will be inserting another zero on there renewals , it’s all about supply and demand especially as people have been buying boats at an alarming rate and are still doing so , I know a few that are already looking to be in the move due to the major players getting greedy , they will all follow suit to extract as much as they can . On another note the running costs to the major players must be at an all time low with staff being paid by Mr Sunak , plus toilet blocks and showers are still closed at some marinas reducing the running costs , and the price of lift outs , well that’s another story .
Can you tell I dont own a boat anymore .

And I will add that Anthony Foulkes is the nicest marina operator I have ever met and moored my boat with , nothing is ever too much trouble , no excuses , no family politics in view of not delivering a request , and it’s a safe marina as there are a few live aboard there.

^ Wot Superheat said. These are the Hamble bargains.

I'm paying 11k in Swanwick. I might need to rethink.
Last time I was there 5 years ago it was £7500 for a 43ft boat. I’d say that inflation has had nothing to do with Premier marinas price hikes over that time .

Have you checked out MDL "simply berthing" for boats under 9.9m, it is a basic mdl berthing service, when I enquired it was £500-600 cheaper, but check the restrictions and extra costs, although it does include optuim reward scheme.

Judging by your logo image I think you would be fine in Birdham. Obviously tidal limits - about 3 hours either side of HW. The lock is exactly the width of 1 landing craft (Which it was designed to accomodate) and has very nasty concrete bits sticking out on approach but very helpful lock keepers and super location. Onsite craning out facilites as well. (we are in its sister marina Royal Clarence in Pompey harbour also well worth a look)

Loads to go on already. Many thanks. Love Birdham. Gonna take boat round and see how essily I manage access. Rather got used to having no restrictions at Hythe and Northney.

What's your draft? The biggest issue is what you can do in the six hours the lock is open, in summer not so bad with longer daylight and lock opening hours but in the winter less options.

At last, someone talking sense, Volvo Paul well done that man. Its all about supply and demand. That's where the prices come from.

If you leave MDL you can never get freedom berthing back and it’s replacement, otium, is a significant price rise wrapped up in particularly opaque marketeer’s hogwash. If there was ever a use for the saying about a turd rolled in glitter it is otium.
Some MDLs are cheaper than others and I’m happy with my overall package at shamrock quay. If forced onto the otium package though I’d leave without question.
Maybe look at other MDLs?

Yes - when there is a lot of demand they put their prices up to reflect the increase in demand. When there is less demand they put their prices up to recoup the money they are losing having empty berths.

MDL many years ago publicly said they were happy to squeeze their clients until the pips squeak. With no one able to take foreign holidays presently and boats changing hands for silly money they are back to their old ways it would seem.

That and wanting to make Mercury on the Hamble a housing estate.

MDL have one motive and one only - PROFIT.

True of any company.

The well run ones don’t just consider short term profit.
