Hi, not strictly a liveaboard question, but I guess I'm most likely to get an answer here. I'm contemplating a job in Lisbon in around 18 months time, and I would like to keep my Oyster 406 there - possibly for 2-3 years. There doesn't seem too much info on suitable marinas on the web, so I would be grateful for any knowledge, experiences, etc.

Many thanks

Neil

Good tram serrvice from Alcantara. I understood that the other marinas were for long time locals; praps you can wangle a berth in one once your feet are under the table

We have used the marinas near Belem in summer but almost impossible to get a permanent berth unless you're local and a member of one of the clubs. Also open to swell from the estuary so most boats have rubber or spring snubbers.

I'm in Marina Parque das Nacoes at the moment, its about a 10 minute cab ride from the airport and a short walk to the Oriente station. Enter through locks which have mostly been on freeflow (its neapy) except overnight. Talking to a German yesterday, he's taken a 12 month lease moving from Portimao and says he's saving money - though he'd been on the Algarve for about 20 years and his wife fancied the change. Downside is that there seems little entertainment hereabout and the marina has silted badly in some areas so theres only about a 1/3 that looks viable for keeled boats, I wonder if it'll still be viable without dredging for the duration of your stay.

We were in Parque de Nacoes for about 6 weeks last summer.

It was very cheap for the summer months and the marina staff were very helpful with everything from taking ropes to organising taxis to the airport ( it's very close).

It was exceptionally hot there in mid summer as there is little sea breeze so far from the open sea. This also however made it feel safe to leave the boat there unattended for a month because there was no swell.

We took local buses into central Lisbon a few times and the service was cheap, regular, and frequent.

The immediately local area was quiet but larger shopping facilities and some entertainments were within a 15 minute walk. Supermarkets too.

I guess that if you are working on that side of Lisbon and use the airport regularly and want to keep the costs down, it is a tempting option.

We did also stay in Cascais for a while, and though expensive in the summer months it may be more of viable option for an annual berth. The train ran from the centre of town into the centre of Lisbon so would be convenient for the short commute. We found the town very pleasant but you would have to try to get some info on the winter- life and prices if you were to explore this option.

Im not sure which one it is, but one of the more central marinas is under the road/rail bridge and after visiting it for lunch one day, we felt like the constant road noise may be draining in the long term.

We really enjoyed Lisbon and if you have the opportunity to work there for a while, it should be great.

Ps. Maybe renting some weekday accommodation in central Lisbon and having your boat on the Algarve for long weekends and hols would be an even more tempting arrangement.

We found Cascais expensive for a short stay, 46 euros a day for a 10.5 metre
boat. But the marina is good, the town a gem, and the rail link into Lisbon
very easy and scenic to use.
If they gave you a decent price long term that would be my choice.

The one under the bridge is Santo Amaro and to be avoided unless completely deaf. As well as traffic noise, the bridge resonates in some wind conditions and the marina has lots of noisy restaurants.
