Had problems with Lofrans Tigres winch tripping out.
Tried all the electrics, bypassed the relays then the trip switch as suggested. Still no joy. Decided it had to be the motor or something in the gears. Removed the windlass from the deck and seperated the motor from the gears. Motor seemed OK but so did the gears. By this time the decision had been taken to strip the gears. Had got as far as draining the oil when noticed that the motor occasionally made a strange noise when turned by hand. One of the 4 screws that hold the magnets was slightly loose. Only took half turn but now back together and (touch wood) running perfectly.

Worth checking. Thanks for the info. I'll check mine in two weeks when I get to Corfu. (My woodruff key is distorted from leaving the chain on the gipsy. The gipsy comes off Ok but I can see that it's going to be a bitch getting the inner cone free.)

I had a Honda outboard once that suffered rust on the inside of the pressed steel flywheel which expanded pushing the magnets against the armature cores resulting in no spark and metal filings all over the place.

Remedy:- replaced the flywheel with one from a Volvo Penta 7.5hp saildrive (basically same motor) which had a cast flywheel - although a little heavier.

Just shows you how the unexpected keeps us on our toes.
