Hi can anybody advise on the size of rope and chain suitable for this windlass ? Thank you.

The Airon used to be a very popular Lofrans model, which I'm pretty sure that could handle different chains, depending on the barbotin fitted.
A quick google search didn't point me to any correspondance between "AR026617" and a particular barbotin, so I'm afraid that this code alone might not be sufficient to answer your question.
Otoh, it shouldn't be that difficult to check if the barbotin is sized for a 6, 8 or 10mm chain - which I believe were the possible alternatives, though 6 and 8 were surely the most common.

And to measure the size of chain you have, it's the diameter of the rod used to bend round to make each link

to make things even worse, the diameter of the rod used to make each link is not enough...
You may have a 10mm chain but it may be 28mm long or 30mm (and iirc that's the inside of length of the link)
the 30mm is ISO (again iirc) the other is something else rather.
So measure carefully rod diameter, and length of each link (and do it in 3-4 different places in the length of the chain to be sure) and then you know what you have.

What no-one has said is to take off the drum and gypsy (barbotin?) and see what is marked on it - it will say the chain size to use. On Lofrans Airons you sould remove the drum several times a year anyway - if you don't it can seize on badly.

Ok thanks very much, I will check that out. Why do they need to be removed ? Do they seize up and what should I use to lubricate it ? Wd40?
