Coming back along the North Kent coast on Monday I came across a couple of white plastic bottles as pot markers, very difficult to see even in lovely conditions. The crazy thing is that they were layed right between East Last and Hook Spit buoys,a very shallow part of the coast.I don't understand the mentality of whoever put them there,do they know nothing or not understand what may happen?

Well apart form being theft and the chance of a very upset and possibly violent fisherman venting his spleen at you, then there is nothing stopping you!

I heartily agree that poorly marked and placed pots are a danger but that doesn't give anyone the right to steal the contents of the pot. Not the done thing.

Thing is its very narrow between those buoys and in any kind of sea or bad light you just would'nt see them,I can't see that a competent fisherman would place them there,so who does this sort of thing? If you've only got one engine and get snagged it would only take minutes before you were aground.

Unfortunately there's lots of incompetent thick fishermen who really couldn't give a toss. Also lots of amateurs who don't know better.

There should be a rule about the size and colour of any marker and also about floating line. Fisheries patrols should be able to lift and confiscate any gear which does not conform. All IMHO.

Agree with you there, does'nt take much thought to keep them out of fairways.Futher along off Whistable there were five or six markers all about 4 or 5 feet high with flags on and you could see them along way off.

You need a quickutter, the only cutter that doesn't slow your boat down! and it will even cut ss wire! we get them near the rocks so if your that close you've got problems already!

Sounds like you need a quickutter? chops the rope and even ss wire! so that'll sort out the fishermen, theve got a web site but you can find them searching google
Some ppots do get dragged by the tide if they have too short a line and there've been big tides...but they should have good markers on...we have the same problem off the Devon coast but its usually near the rocks...so you shouldn't be there anyway!

Good luck

Quickutter is not the only cutter that does not slow your boat down. We have Strippers and they do not slow us down

Not thinking about myself so much as some poor sod struggling against the tide etc.Not that we are speedsters but with enough horsepower to go slowly comfortably.

We do have a problem with ahem, locals and holiday makers making a bit of cash on the side in the area.A number have been prosecuted with fines and confiscation of gear.big row recently and several locals banned from fishing as not freeman.
