My daughter has bought me a lobster pot, it is something that we have always fancied trying.

The pot is this one from Coastal Nets, it is a real work of art and very heavy-

We will be using this infrequently and probably store it off the boat but I wonder has anyone on here tried one, I am not sure what to use as bait, where the bait sits in the pot and if you need a licence ( the pot came with a 10m rope and a big float ), any advice would be appreciated?

Nothing more satisfying than catching your own lobster.
You will find a thick rubber band around the entrance hole, with some line attached that seems to be tied to the side netting / frame - pull this line to pull the rubber band away from the cylinder and slip the bait in - mackerel is a good choice.

Pardon me for mentioning it but for the benefit of others considering dropping a pot or two please make sure they're marked with sensibly sized and coloured buoys and not a silly little five litre plastic container tied through the carrying handle. On an animal welfare note (yes I know it's going to be killed anyway) inspect your pot(s) at least daily. Bon apetit.

oh no, only just escaped the lobster pots in Devon & Cornwall, marked with milk plastic cartons, put it somewhere boats on passage don't go. Ta. & hope you get many lobsters. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes, I tried it once.

It all started when I discovered that my boat had been used as dumping ground for retired lobster pots. The one I found in my cockpit weigh half a ton and needed one of those Deadliest Catch winches to lift it.

I wasted an entire morning baiting and finding a place to sink my pot. The next day I wasted another morning retrieving and disposing the hundred odd small crabs I found in the pot.

In the end I dumped the pot on someone else's boat.

Mind you, the fly tipper who left the pot on my boat also left a prawn pot, which supplies fresh prawns whenever I deploy it.

Thanks K.

Anyway James, the fun is in the anticipation, so I hope you are also lucky. If I want a lobster, I just ask the divers on one of the boats at PD to pick me one up. They gave me a huge one the other week.

Depends what you want to catch, if you are looking to earn then the best way is to paint the buoy black/navy camouflage, attach a 20 m floating rope to the black/Navy buoy and a 5 L orange juice container to the other end.

Find a busy track and stand by at weekends with a tow rope.

Thats how I have seen the pros use them anyway.

Major, you may end up with another one yet!

I have applied to the fisheries for a permit, very simple and at no cost, this refers to various byelaws with regard to the use of the pot including markings, locations etc, however, can't help thinking that I would have been better with a prawn pot though.

Anyway, we will give it a go over the weekend.

Tom, thanks, will give the sausages a try.

Tinned sardines/ kippers have been suggested, anything to stop my boat and me smelling like a trawler!
