Liquid Gold

When you say small, do you mean a 907, or even smaller than that.

They were £16 when I last bought one in 2006. 8 euros or so in Portugal and Majorca.

Cant buy swap refills in Malta - you either buy the whole thing new for about 70 euros, or they refill your own for about 4 euros.

So we still live in rip off britain, even with the 30% fall in the value of the pound!!

I wonder if cars are still cheaper on the continent. If it werent so serious, I could suggest that the car manufacturers and dealers were getting their just deserts for having us over all these years.

Switch to Calor if it will fit which is the same gas and the same people fill theGaz cylinders. Calor is about half the price of Gaz wight for weight. We also found Gaz fills were inconsistent and frequently had problems with overfilled cylinders that had too much pressure and blew the flames away from the flame sensor shutting off the gas until we let out some gas.

As said Calor Gas is much cheaper than Camping Gaz in the UK but visa versa on the contintent. You do have to 'rent' the cylinder but the refills are cheap. A good(cheap) source of Calor Gas cylinders are council rubbish/recycling centres. The current refill cost of the 4.5kg Calor Gas(the smallest size) is £13.50, and I find this easily lasts a summers sailing. The 'rental' cost is £30 per cylinder I think.

I've found a difference of £4 between Chandlers and Outdoor camping shops. Here in Essex its around £20 at the marina and £16 at the Malson Camping Shop. Calor is so much cheaper but won't fit on my boat unfortunately

A full 13 kg Calor propane bottle costs £24, bottle excluded. I have a refillable Autogas (also propane) bottle in my camper, 11 kg costs about £10. Even Calor Gas don't mind making a bit of profit!

One interesting point though. I see that Calor are introducing a plastic bottle, similar to the ones that have been around in France for years. They save a lot of weight and corrosion but will presumably not be as widely available as the metal ones for a while.

The great thing about Camping Gaz for me is that, firstly, nothing else will fit the locker. This aside, once out of UK and France (anything up to 24 euros per fill) it is very cheap, even though neither the Spanish nor Greeks will admit that it is Camping Gaz. In both countries it is common to see people in the back of chandleries repainting Camping bottles to their preferred colour. Mostly these seem to be refilled on, or close to, the premises. Some of the ones sold in Greece are dangerously rusty and have a piece of electricians tape as the 'new bottle' seal. But they cost only 6 -7 euros each.

The 6 pounder or 2.72 kg.

Used to work in the LNG sites at Milford. If they multiplied up a ship load on that basis, forget gold etc.

A useless fact. All the gold mined in the world comes to 161,000 tons, (ref National Geographic)

Small beer compared to gas!!

what part of Greece did you experience on premises refilling ,rusty bottles ,electricians tape for seals etc?Ive been living ,working , cruising for 18 years in Greece and have never come across these phenomena ,but maybe we are on different planets!!!

Astakos, Preveza, Missalonghi, to name but three. Oh, and Mourtos. In a small 'supermarket' in one of these I handed my bottle in and the owner refilled it while I waited. On at least three occasions I have had refilled bottles handed to me with electricians tape wrapped around the top seal, and recently had one that had a piece of sisal string!

Last season I almost refused a bottle due to my serious concerns over the levels of rust on it. Unfortunately it was the only one they had, so I had no choice.

Don't know what planet you are on but I suggest you keep your eyes open!

There was a tread last year about refilling Gaz from 13kg Calor type cylinders. If one had somewhere to stash the big one (home?) It would solve the prob for many. IIRR someone said the connector fittings were available fom a camping shop for a few quid. Not beyond the wit of man to run up a connection with a flex tube and some old Camping Gaz bits.
An Ozzy chipped in to mention that DIY rigs were at Petrol stations, just bring your bottle.
I might put my head down before some H&SE takes a pot.

Yes, it's quite easy to do and, as you say, the fittings are available. I have quite a few of them although I've never decanted myself.

Many petrol stations will not allow you to refill portable gas bottles on the forecourt and it may be illegal(?). I have a Gaslow bottle in my camper, with the connector built into the van, but it is possible to buy one clipped onto the bottle. So if you had one of these standing in the back of a van and filled it with Autogas, who's to know?

Quite, the price of 200gm Camping Gaz throwaways makes the 902 look cheap. 902 here are over €20 re a 13kg at €26.We do all our cooking on bottle gas (far from town) So decanting is the way. I looked in the bits bin, and found I have the required stuff. Risks don´t worry me as I am used to decanting O2 at 200+bar. Used a (new) flex hose for a greaser.(new for no contaminants). As an aside, I was pressurising the de-icing on an aircraft when there was a big bang. Turned out someone had used the hi pressure tube to syphon some hydraulic fluid. The tube was split for a foot or more.

The australian comment was that it was specificely about refilling domestic bottles. I hadn´t thought about using european autogas. Will now.
