Ok guys, I have a Checkmate Ski boat, and it has been sittin for a while now, and I am going to redo it, first things first is the tariler. How do I get the boat off to redo the trailer, there is no water around here to drop it off in, and I am not driving too far with the trailer, as I do not trust the reliablity of it, please give me any and all suggestions! Thanks

Taylor

Here the answer I made to the same question some time ago on this forum. Mine is a sailboat with fixed keel.

I have been using this method on a boat tat displaces 1.7 metric tons.
1) put the trailer with boat in the position you want the boat to stay.
2) lower the front of the trailer as much as possible, thus lifting the stern in the air.
3) using either a long beam (if the trailer has to be cleared) or some sort of trestle with chocks that can take the weight of the stern.
4) put a beam (longer than the trailer's width) under the bow. lay one end of it on a trestle (or similar) and jack the other end using any jack (I used a simple non hydraulic car jack, remember you are will lifting only roughly 1/4 of the total weight of the boat).
5) make sure the boat is well clear of the trailer, then pull out the trailer from under the boat.
6) chock the boat under the keel, and lower the beam, so that the weight is taken by the keel. Then support the hull laterally, using substantial pads at strong points on the hull, such as chines or other places with internal reinforcment.
7) once your trailer has been overhauled, reverse procedure.
8) If I may, I'd strongly suggest that you undertook this task with no more than one sensible and helpful hand, and not a party of blokes. It is a rather simple task, that nevertheless needs fore thinking and concentration. Also make sure you have enough of timber and chocks before you start.

Cheers, Alexis

Just as Alexis has described, I have removed a 1½ ton bilge keeler from a flat bed trailer. The secret is to have plenty of beams/chocks available, carefully think out the procedure and take it very slowly, bit by bit. If I remember I took about 3 hours.
Alternatively, IF you can get a crowd of blokes(before visiting the pub), you might be able to bodily lift the boat, remove the trailer, and lower onto chocks!! Obviously, if you follow this route, remove all loose gear from the boat, engine, battery, seats etc to make it as light as possible.....
Goodn Luck!

How heavy is it?

I lifted a Leisure 17 (about a ton) by suspending it in "slings" (5 tonne ratchet straps) hanging from a couple of RSJs. One end of the two RSJs was supported by a convenient wall and the other was balanced on a stack of pallates with oil drums on. After then you just let the trailer tyres down and pull it out from underneath. BE careful if using oil drums, because they are quite easy to crush if the boat is too heavy. If they were stood on something strong enough maybe you could fill them with water and put the stoppers in so they didn't compress but they'd be very heavy!
