It might help you to decide by having a look around at the boat show. When I was after some to kit our boat out I had the idea of going for some cheaper ones but when you get to see them in the flesh and how they're made I was convinced that you get what you pay for (to an certain extent) and I went for Crewsavers. Whatever you buy however I think the balance of opinion is that you should get ones with crotch or thigh straps.

Can't help with objective comparisons, but have a look at the "Ocean Passage" model marketed by Aladin's Cave. It's a harness model and comes complete with built in sprayhood (as opposed to a separate one in a pouch), thigh straps and a good quailty light. Apparently, they're made by Crewsaver so the quality should be OK. All for around £90.

Re:re quality

Any and all have to come with the eu kite mark, I brought the cheap ones from compass and feel content that they will work if and when needed.
My daughter tinkered with the release mechanism on one and the next day it went off , fully opened did exactly as it's supposed to !!!! while I sat there thinking what the **** is that ..

The one's I got cost £35.00 have no thigh strap or light but do have the whistle .
Cheers

Secumar

I've got three Secumars on board. They're comfortable to wear. Only two made it through the bi-annual inspection. The third one is mine, so often used, and the are bladder had micro leaks due to chafe. Refills are affordable.

Price: about 80-90£, 125€

But I have yet to need one in anger.

BTW: does everyone go out and have their vests re-inspected, as according to specs?

Group of people on the pontoon: skipper is the one with the toolbox.

As suggested try some for fit at the boat show. I have 2 XM ones which are comfortable and 3 Sowester ones which I picked up at a very reasonable price - they are not so comfortable as they have smaller webbing but are automatic...
Get ones with a ring for a harness and thigh/crutch straps are recommended.
If I remember XM & Crewsaver came out well in tests a few years ago.

Whatever you buy,
make sure you carry re-arming kits,
make sure you test it and service it every year.

I had one fail during a sea survival training course. I then got a wave in the face just as I breathed in while trying to blow it up. The instructor dragged me out choking and spluttering, if he hadn't been there I'd probably have drowned! And that was in a heated swiming pool! Don't much like them now!

Best I've ever used is the crewsaver crew jackets supplied to the RNLI's inshore lifeboat crews. They are a combination of foam and gas. But alas I don't think they are available to the general public!
