Successful weekend in cleaning the water tanks with Milton.

But even after 4 complete flushes, there remains a slight smell of Milton (bleach).

Ideas to kill the smell?

Have you ever tried those water purification tablets, might be worth a try.

We have the seagull IV. I doubt it would stop the bleachy smell, but generally it makes tanked water quite drinkable (though it reduces the flow rate, best fitted to a dedicated drinking water tap)

Hi Piers

Made any good milk carton catches lately?

I use the tablets at the start of the season, with the right dose the water is only slightly tainted with the bleach smell/taste and once you have flushed that out and refilled its gone completely!

I dont know what all the moaning is about, My brother has been living on his boat in the Med for the last four years. He says that they have to drink the water out there because you just cannot get into town often enough for bottled! he says that once he got over the initial 3 weeks of the runs he was fine!!!

I flushed mine with bleach and then used white vinegar to get rid of the chlorine smell. Seems to have worked well after several good flushes.

Thinking about it Piers why dont you have one of those machines that turns sea water to drinking water, problem solved.

Hi Dom - I already have a water maker on board, but given impurities from shore side water as well as other points of potential contamination, problems will still occur.

Will we see you on the MBM trip when we come to Guernsey? I could do with some more Soltron....

Not really sure Piers, I only have a 25 gallon tank and put in about 0.5 litre, but that was probably OTT, it's just I had no use for any remaining vinegar!

Longjohnsilver had the answer, Piers...use a solution of one quart white vinegar to five gallons water and allow this solution to agitate in tank for several days, then drain and fill again with fresh water.
