Lidl gear???

I've had an Aldi set on board for three seasons, for occasional use by visitors etc. and they are fine for that purpose. Don't know how good they would be in regular use.

Guy Cotten

I go for Guy Cotten everytime , you just can't beat it for heavy weather gear.
Lidls are good for cans of rice pudding and indoor weather stations.

Where does one buy Guy Cotten these days? My stuff came from an excellent chandlers in Weymouth, but when I went there to get some for The Boy it had turned - in the last ten years - into an average chandler with no clothing in sight.

Guy Cotton

Tarbert fisheries have them, so does the chandler on the quay at Lerwick, don't suppose that's much use to you but I'm sure most fishery type chandlers would keep them.
Can't remember whether it was Monthly or PBO but there was a test a couple of years back of the lidl or aldi oilskins, I think that they couldn't find anything significant wrong with them but doubted that they'd last.

Well, thanks, but talking up Guy Cotton wasn't going to help me decide on Lidl gear. I went and bought them anyway - they were snapped as soon as the shop opened, by all accounts - got the last one in my size (11.00 am) only 'cos it was loose, out of it's box. A cursory examination suggested the quality was good, and for 70 Euro for a full offshore waterproof, it can't be sneezed at. Got the full trousers for 50 as well.

I purchased Lidl leggings and got three afternoon sails out of them and the zip disintegrated. Steer clear total waste of money...

So you get a refund if you go and see them with the offending article. They are pretty good that way.

I've got a Lidl sailing jacket meant for SWMBO. Its never been worn and its too small for me . I got Aldi waterproof trousers and they have been fine for five years now.

I have Lidl jacket from 2yrs ago. Quite light and fine for a bit of spray but not really waterproof. Handy though, and cheap.

Bought one of these jackets in the summer because I just could not resist the price, and my old waterproof was wearing out.
Have used it over the summer and all fine so far, it is comfortable enough and keeps the water out. There are better jackets out there, but even if it lasts a couple of seasons, it has been worth it. As one poster mentioned, the knack is getting hold of one, as they seem to sell out very quickly, which must say something!

If you are ever in Brittany there is an end-of-Line outlet for Guy Cotten at Trégunc a few km from Concarneau. I got a set of yellow oilies for €10.

I have had bottom of the range (!) beathable bottoms from both Helly and Musto, and both have lasted very badly before becoming porous. I doubt Lidl stuff could be worse and will certainly be cheaper.

That's a great buy Sybarite. Guy Cotten seems to be very expensive - even in France.

It's actually difficult to compare specs with the pukah brands, because they don't tell you much. The Lidl offshore jacket boasts waterproofing to a water column of 8000 mm (with waterproof considered as 1300) - there is no equivalent spec from Gill (O2) or Musto. Gill claimed taped seams, Lidl claim heat-sealed taped seams. Lidl boast of an extra external Cordura layer on wearing places - haven't seen that on the big-name brands.

A the end of the day, they are all probably made in a similar factory in China......

I'm happy enough anyway - especially if you compare the prices (less than a 1/3 of the price) !

Have you tried thoroughly washing them off with fresh water? Supposed to restore waterproofing I have read somewhere.

There used to be a guy on here who ran an online chandlery. He had manufactured breathable oilies at a very good price, which he claimed came from same factory as some very major brands. Pretty good spec too, but without the big name labels, he seemed to struggle to sell them in numbers.

Thanks, will give it a go with the Mustos over the winter. The HH went to the charity shop.

what you need to do with many breathables, is wash and tumble dry them. The tumble drying lets the material 'bead' water so the fabric doesn't become waterlogged, which stops them breathing. Not all materials are the same, so you really need to read the care instructions for them carefully.
