Levers at forward end of boom next to sheaves - what are they for?

Clutches to hold your reefing lines when reefed

ps Of course you have to feed the lines properly through the boom to make them work

I guess if your reefing lines run back to the cockpit through those sheaves you might not do anything with them as the jammers are by the winch drum so the boom ones remain open ? Perhaps you have retrofit in cockpit reefing?
 
Mine aren't sprung, so the lines run free unless you push the levers up.
I had them on my previous boat and have seen them on many others. None had spring to hold them open or closed. Sprung open makes little sense as gravity and friction give the same effect. Spring closed would probably be very annoying when shaking out a reef with the sail down. I used to do that on my previous boat if still reefed from last time because it was still blowing hard when lowered the sail. Easy enough when I could just open the jammers and pull the line out from the boom.

I suspect springs on these things will be fairly rare.
 
The Trapper has them and they are used at the mo, but ropes are being led aft soon, so will become redundant. I can't think of any use for springs to open or close, likely to get in the light.
 
I think Selden use the clutches in, or on, the boom for their in boom reefing. They also use them for the outhaul. We have a Selden boom.

Our reef 1 is done at the boom, its normally not difficult, we have routed reefs 2 and 3 to clutches operated from the cockpit and we seldom use reef 1 and tend to go straight to reef 2. We had to change and extend the reef 2 line to reach the cockpit. Reef 3 is single line reefing and is very long.

We far prefer to reef from the cockpit than need to make a visit to the mast.
