The fore hatch (aka the 'escape hatch') on my Shetland 570 is leaking, possibly from the front edge. The frame is rivetted, so any tips before I take it all apart?

Memories....

My very first boat was a Shetland 570, and I have lots of great memories of the time my wife and I spent on it. As far as the front hatch is concerned, I'd try some sealant first.

Does yours have the funny ribbed carpet in the forecabin?

I had a 40hp outboard, which was big enough to allow some fun - what are you running?

Welcome to the forum Barnickolbill, and this your very first post as well,

To check if the seal is the problem, just open the hatch, cover the base with some cling wrap and apply a continuous bead of sealant on the underside of the hatch, close the hatch, a few days later, open the hatch and remove the cling wrap.

Also check behind the latch, the '0' ring should be replaced and lubricated.

The above is best done one at a time to establish if it's the seal or the '0' ring that needs replacing. The bead of sealant can be removed with a sharp scraper.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the tips. I now know where the leak is, between the glass and it's surround. The hatch seal's working OK, and the fixed part's OK as well.
Houdini, the manufacturers, who are still in business, think that 25 years is about the service life of these hatches, so it's about time to buy a new one. Not at £165 a throw I'm not!
Or I try some way to inject a very thin bead of sealant into the gap, as a temporary measure.
