Briefly,

(i) Am I the only one who thinks that the 'traffic lights' in the anti-collision reg's piece may be interpreted as being the wrong way around? Do they apply to the boat at the bottom of the illustration, or those either side?

(ii) I can't believe they wrote about the Medway without mentioning the frequent obstructions in the water, appalling unfriendliness of some marina owners, critical shortage of visitor berths, shockingly hazardous lock design vis-a-vis ladders, horrible bad-manners of the local boaters who don't bother with both lock gates, incredibly poor value-for-money for visitors, etc. And, why did they not do a proper write-up on the surprisingly excellent new Chatham Maritime Marina? It was definitely the highlight of my trip.

(Mind, they did publish my letter last month, so they can't be all bad...)

Glad you said all that about the medway. I was gonna go there for a trip. The quip about the local boaters is going to bring you some flak/forums/images/icons/smile.gif As for publishing the letters, I wouldn't get too excited, they quoted HLB as well! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

Ahem why open both gates if your boat is so titchy that you only need to open one.
Saves wear on hinges/hernias etc.
As for the bits n pieces in the water between New Hythe and Aylesford we just chuck a few bits in now and then(think i saw a tractor wheel in there the other day) to keep the less intrepid boaters out of the upper reaches.More free berths for us (if you know where to find em.

Just hold tight dear it will not be so rough when we get round the corner, trust me.

Oldgit,

I know that we were sparring partners a while ago, but don't give me that rubbish about only needing to open one gate... What about the next boat along, which happens (as in my case) to be a seven-and-a-half-tonner, single crewed, with the only crew-member trying to enjoy a holiday!

I was NOT amused on the Medway. Every lock I came to was set in my favour, but with only one gate open. Thus, I had to moor downstream of every single one, get off, open the other gate, motor into the lock, shut down etc etc. Damn rudeness. If they can't be courteous to larger boats, let's weld one of every pair of doors in place, and close the navigation to anything over six foot beam.

Bear in mind my orignal reaon for visiting the Medway was to evaluate it as a river to buy a property with moorings on, and install Mrs Alpha etc as riverside dwellers while keeping the boat going. We're at Bray now (on the Thames) and, broadly, happy with our lot.

My main gripe is with poorly-researched magazine articles which show all the potential plus points without raising a single one of the valid negatives.

A touch over sensitive perhaps? Wot about the narow beam boat that comes along after you and therefore needs to close BOTH gates instead of just one? Can understand mild irritation in both cases but still better than arriving to find lock set against you !
Mind you, on River Wey Navigation think Im right in saying the guidelines require both gates to be opened and shut regardless of beam - less likely for narrow beam boats to cause damage to gates by trying to squeeze thru just one.
