So it’s something I have always wanted to do , go around on a boat that is, what are the pitfalls , do you go 2 miles off or close in. Info would be appreciated. Thanks BB

I rounded Lands End travelling from Portishead to Southampton. We did this in 3 legs. Portishead to Padstow, Padstow to Plymouth, the Plymouth to Southampton. The trip was timed to ensure that any breeze was less than 10 knots at Pendeen. This is where the currents collide. Wind over tide is not nice. We dropped the speed from our cruising 18-20 kn to 5 kn at Pendeen. We had about 20 mins of considerable and unpleasant swell. The boat was untroubled (Azimuth 39). Wonderful experience. I kept about 2 miles off shore to avoid rocks, and lobster pots. Pots can be a major hazard, and a good lookout is required.

Seriously?! Could you not big it up some more? The object being to strike terror into him. A sleepless night or two would have been just revenge for him making off with my pilots guide the pilfering git!

Ah, 4m standing waves, green water over the bow sweeping away windscreens, uncharted rocks, locals taking potshots from the cliffs - it is west Cornwall. And there be sea monsters in them parts!!

Stuff like that?

Well if your going around a little island go 10 miles out otherwise you will be back before lunch.
If your going around Australia just pop across to new Zealand for 2 weeks and come back and tell your mates it was tough as he'll.

Once I am around Lands End I will be safe , because a Formula could never make the trip.

This won’t be very exciting but I crossed the (English) channel from St Helier in a 6-7 which was deeply unpleasant but we made it and instead of making for Falmouth ended up in Salcombe for a few days. We then had a beautiful flat calm crossing directly around Lands End and spent the night in Padstow harbour (been there a few times now). Out of Padstow and across a millpond-like water all the way into Swansea. This was in March this year and was completely unremarkable - but ever so pleasant! That was in a Fairline 50 Fly.
