Has anyone any experience of these engines? Are they any good? Are spares readily available? Are they easy to service? Etc. Any other considerations?

Thanks in advance.

fitted mine, Kubota based, Nanni 1540 HE 11 yrs ago now @ 900 hrs.
i have adjusted the tappets & changed its oil & filters. Err nothing else apart from an exhaust elbow @ about 700 hrs

I have a three cylinder Kubota that the previous owner marinised using Beta parts. Beta and I think other marine engine manufacturers use the Kubota as a base unit.

My engine (usually) runs well

Both Beta and Nanni are really Kubota, and owners of those brands always seem very positive about them. As mentioned, a lot of stuff that gets dragged around and beaten up on building sites is Kubota.

I'd have no worries.

AR Peachment of Brundall Norfolk are the Nanni agents....the Nanni marinised Kubota engine is the machine of choice for the Norfolk Broads hire industry....so there are hundreds merrily and reliably running around and have been for years.

My first boat more than 20 years ago had a Kubota engine, which was already more than 10 years old. It was not marinised by another company, not even sure if Nanni and Beta existed then. It was a super engine, I was amazed by the manufacturing standards, polished connecting rods, superb detail casting, etc. Never missed a beat for many years, including a second Med visit by the next owners.

My rocker cover as removed @ 900 hrs ( 850 hrs since the only other time ).

Ill let you know next month,
Ive just last weekend bought one, and installing it next weekend,
43HP to replace a perkins 4107.
I hope its a good move....

Kubota

As others have said, the base engines seem fine. What lets you down is the marinisation. Mine –coming out this weekend – was badly done and all the problems I've had have been to do with the marinisation side: leaks, consequent corrosion. I've no reason to doubt the qualiy of the basic engine, and I'm buying a new Beta which is of course a Kubota at heart – but marinised by people with experience and a reputation to lose.

Cheer

Chris

In terms of BASE motor Kubota are the gold standard, closely followed by Yanmar, Shibura and Mitsubishi in that order.

As mentioned in the thread both Beta and Nanni are Kubota based. Their small diesel engines are used in both the plant and the agricultural industry, and hence spares are available and relatively cheap.
Because they are " non boaty" prices tend to be about half that of "boaty" for routine spares and consumables.
Go for it

I have just rebuilt a Nanni badged Kubota. I can confirm the quality of the Kubota engineering, first rate all round. The spares seem to be available, even for quite old engines. The prices quoted were horrendous from most of the 'Marine' dealers I contacted. I sourced most of the parts needed from Bryco, first rate service and not too painful prices.
