For a different idea. Select your favourite working pants. Mark or measurre where the pressure is when you are kneeling. You probably have old jeans /dungaree pants or similar that can be cut up to make padding patches. Sew them into place either outside or inside with a sewing machine. 3 or 4 layers should be doable with domestic machine and should make a huge difference to comfort. ol'will

If you are going to do that ... then why not sew Velcro to the trousers .... stick opposite velcro to the pads ...

As long as you put the soft loop side of velcro to the trousers - then when not using the pads - trousers are still ok ..

My knees were safely out of the way. The cushion's job was to prevent me ending up with the injection pipe pattern printed across my chest. Anything I dropped usually hid under the engine, but a magnet on a stick could retrieve it, usually with only a little swearing.

You can get work trousers for les than £20 at Screwfix or Toolstation some times.
I do prefer the pads in the trouser pocket.

Question ?

With all the possibilities - what about pricing ? I assume that any pad that gets onto a Marine Sales shelf will get the customary hike up in price ?

Would it be a case of local bike / board shop for pads ? Garden shop for kneeling pad ?

I'm reluctant to use my seating cushions - I can imagine them getting grubby pretty quick ...

So far I have not bought any pads ... I tend to get a small towel and fold it up to kneel on .. or an old jacket. But this thread has me considering a trip to local garden shop ....

I’ve used both strap on pads and pocket pads and much prefer the latter. Straps are uncomfortable and I always found myself having to adjust them to just the right position. Pocket pads are unobtrusive and always where you need them. I’m use de Walt trousers £40 from b&q

I have to say that I'm the laziest one out ... if I'm going to do a job - I often get moaned at by SWMBO for not changing clothes !!

To change trousers to have pad pockets ... I'd probably do it once - maybe twice ... then back to old ways !!

I have quite lot of work to do on the teak deck coming up next month.
I've never bothered with knee pads before, but this time I think it is probably worth while.
They need to be the strap on type, not the type that fit in pockets of overalls.
There's a bewildering range available online.
Any suggestion on what to buy and what to avoid.
I'm happy to spend a bit of money on knee pads that might make a tedious job a bit more comfortable.

I got these as a X-Mas present some years ago, and they're quite comfortable.
Wear them most of the time now when sailing.

Thanks for all the input.
I've just ordered a new pair of work trousers with reinforced knees patches and pockets for knee pads, from Screw Fix.
That seems like practical solution.
I can collect from Screw Fix, there's one about a mile from where I live.

Whats your reason behind not wanting the slip into pocket type? From someone who spend most of my days kneeling/ doubled over (heating engineer before the minds start wandering) ,the type that slip into pre formed knee pockets on work trousers are far superior. The strap on type will dig into the back of your knee, you will forget to wear them ( until you have knelt on that screw head). The former also in my opinion make great sailing wear also and once your accustomed to them they will keep your knees nice n warm preventing uncle Arthritis.
Ditto. I used Snickers with their best standard insert kneepads. Supplied them for my troops as well. I also wore them with braces, after my arse emigrated North and East and became my stomach, leaving nothing to hold my Snickers up.
Very hard wearing and long lasting kit. Well worth protecting the knees and as the 3ringer rightly says, wait till you kneel on a screw 😵
