Interesting read in the Sunday paper which seems to allude to the fact that in Mexico they have some form of licence for powerboat drivers. Apparently the Gent driving the boat which ran over Kirsty MacColl wasn't licenced to drive that particular craft
I guess you motorboaties would welcome it if the Government were to introduce legislation to the UK - it does seem a nonsense that potentially lethal machines may be driven without any formal training or licencing arrangement now doesn't it?

Actually when out diving, which was what Kirsty was doing when she met her untimely end, the greater danger comes from plonkers in sailboats who think your marker buoy is something they need to steer close to, and as you surface you don't hear these wind driven machines.

You do however hear power boats some distance away!

Oh alright, a little nibble then, but the boat licence thingy, na, not gonna bite on that. Well maybe not yet.

Hmm. But would lots of training and expertise solve the problem? For example, almost all the car accidents and even speeding offences involve trained pilots and drivers, don't they? Hm? Lockem all up, whaddya say? Or at least, restrict them to a milk float on land and a trudgy rag-only boat at sea, with a heater more powerful than the engine. Don't worry - nobody here would be materially affected.

What about a bit of lateral thinking. Barry is about to go to war in Irag. He will contribute to the oil shortage that will ensue - so as a reward for passing his certificate of motorboatiedrivingcompetence, he gets to use some fuel - perhaps discounted. This must appeal surely and the material benefits could be enjoyed by a more qualified motorboating community?

Huh! We're not falling for that old press-gang cobblers! Anyway, I don't use any of that foreign muck - only North Sea stuff for me, and I have certainly done my bit in quoting Duke of Northumberland, mentioning 1745 and otherwise winding up the Scots to qualify for half price, I reckon.

You're just miffed that you didn't buy a heap of BP shares on Tuesday at 357 eh?

Surely the point is....

that the licensing didn't do Kirsty MacColl any good.

I wonder how many people were killed or seriously injured in Powerboating accidents in the UK last year. Perhaps our leader Kim could tell us.

Doh
Is that Northumberland or that bugger Cumberland?
