I have a Jeanneau Symphony 1979 and wondered how to go about checking the keel bolts, I believe nut access within the keel is behind metallic windows, how do you find these? Roy M:)

It is possible that they are through bolts with nuts at the bottom in recesses in the keel, but more normally the nuts are inside the boat, sometimes glassed over. However, studs threaded into the keel are more common, again with nuts inside. Unless there has been damage or the keel to hull joint has failed there is no reason to disturb the keel attachments. The only checking you need do is that the nuts inside are tight (assuming they are not glassed over).

All the links I can find for a Symphonie show it to be a fin keeled boat. With this arrangement the keel bolts are normally screwed into tapped holes in the keel, with no external access. The arrangement you describe with 'windows' is used with a long-keeled boat where the bolts are inserted from below.

If the nuts/stud heads inside look OK and there are no signs of the keel being loose, or lots of rusts streaks down the keel externally in line with the bolts, leave well alone. Start trying to remove keelbolts on a GRP boat and you can cause a lot of grief, usually to find the bolts/studs were fine after all.

There are about 5 inspection windows about 8 inches down the keel. Fiberglass cover, tap around with a hammer to find. I have pictures from my 1981 symphonie if you would like more info. You have to smash them and then reglass. Mine were great below waterline. The ones in the bilge had a couple of rotten nuts. The bolts in the bilge had their threads glues so my guy spent a long time grinding to solid metal and tapping on new bolts.
