Kedge Anchor Advice

I'm after some advice as to the preferred option for a kedge anchor, suitable for a 31 ft boat on the East Coast.

I genuinely want advice and am not trying to start "another bl**dy anchor debate"

On my Jeanneau SO35, East Coast based, I have:

Main : 35lb CQR, 50m 10mm Chain.
Kedge: 12kg Bruce, 30m 10mm Chain and 50m Anchorplait.
Lunchhook: Fortress FX12, 5m 10mm Chain, 50m Anchorplait.

I also have an electric windlass which helps enormously.

I have found the CQR to hold anything so far, but I have not tried it on a lee shore at F10.

The Bruce also has performed well
The Fortress seems to dig better into weed.

When I fore and aft anchor, I now use CQR/Fortress, as its easier to recover.

I will be fitting a stern anchor roller this year, as its easy to damage the boat recovering anchors over the stern.

If you really plan to use it as a kedge rather than a lunch hook, you also need to consider the anchor cable type and how to use it. IMHO, this means a short but heavy length of chain (10m of 10mm for me) followed by something that is easy to use and stow. Ankraline web looks good, and stows nicely on a reel, but I would worry about deploying from a reel in a dinghy. My preference is for 14mm octoplait - length as required for cruising area. All contained in a canvas sack for easy carriage.

I use a Danforth, and of this style, Fortress would appear to be the best.

Fortress or if you need to economise a bit the guardian version is good -I've used one on a first 31.7 or three years only one failure -in a bed of weed

Seems a Fortress is almost unanimous. I use one, either for anchoring fore and aft, bows-to or doubled up with the Delta in a big blow. For these purposes it has proved to be excellent. Very easy to handle in the dinghy and easy to retrieve by hand, although it digs a long way down in sand with a strong pull.

As said above, a short length of chain seems to help, I have 7 metres of 8 mm and 50 metres of Anchorplait.

Thanks for all the advice. Have ordered a Sentinel (Danforth Type) with 6m of 8mm chain and 50m of 12mm anchor warp.

I'm quite surprised as nobody did suggest a Sentinel ..

Like most of the answers. I also suggest a FORTRESS.. and don't confuse it with a Sentinel or any kind of "clone" copie of the Danforth..
