KAD 44 EDC starter motor - how does it engage

The starter motor solenoid has two functions, it supplies power to the motor whilst engaging the bendix drive and motor pinion with the engine flywheel.
Some good detailed explanations available on google which will help to understand it.

There is very little to lubricate. The contacts inside the solenoid assembly can burn out or corrode. The main motor brushes can get stuck. To sort it properly I think you will need to take it off and get it on a bench. If you want to test it off the engine make sure it is very very well secured - it will rip your arm off if you try and hold it. In the end probably easier to get a recon if you are sure that fault is within the starter motor.

His problem is getting it off due to the constraints of the design and build ,I was asked but location way off my patch .
I’ve worked on these boats which are not easy.

tnx, that's an interesting video

the solenoid pulls but it occasionally fails to engage first time, ok at the second attempt
just making notes as to how often it fails to engage, less than one in ten at the moment ...

if we get to sorting the issue i will def replace the unit rather than repair it

Have you checked all electrical connections including the return/earth side?

not electrical as far as i can hear
goes round just fine, sounds as if it is not engaging properly and grinding round
or could that still be a poor connection ?
plenty of voltage / power, two fully charged new red tops for one KAD 44

If its a hit and miss fault it could be the wiring, or it could be internal. Always worth checking the simple things first.

Yes it could, if it isn't getting sufficient power or had a bad earth then the solonoid won't travel as far and wont have as much pull to engage the bendix with the flywheel gear teeth.
