Kad 44 ecu

Have you considered a specialist ecu firm like BBA-Reman? They may be able to help if you have the part nos etc. They have a very good reputation in the automotive world. May be worth a call, anyway.

Have you confirmed that it is defiantly the ecu? They do fail but it is very rare. What symptoms do you have?
I'd agree what's the fault codes and problem .

I went to boat where he was told it was the ecu , I calibrated the levers and away it went .

Are boats .co.uk paying for it?

Yep, def ECU as confirmed by very experienced Volvo engineer. It will not communicate with the diagnostics kit, and further, it appears it has been changed at sometime in the past and is the wrong unit for a KAD 44, but obviously came from a KAMD 44 - different torque curves and so on. It has not been running correctly, and will not communicate any fault codes. Pain in the derriere, but it has to be done.

Id argue though that is the wrong ECU was fitted at point of sale, then the defect is latent and there at the time of delivery. In that case there is no limit on the warranty as you can prove to boat was defective at the point of sale (unless you have swapped the ECU out of course, which I doubt you have)

For a new boat, definitely yes - but for a secondhand boat?

when I was in the motor trade (stay with me) even on 2nd hand stuff where we gave a warranty and a part could be shown to be at fault at the point of sale we had to fix it. Obviously a lot of the time this was difficult to do but where something has been supplied with the wrong part I cant see a way to back pedal. Now BCU might say 'no, take us to court' but surely its worth an initial investigation for the thick end of £3k

New or used, they gave a warranty on a stock boat and the modified (Oct 2016) sale of goods act applies. It was in effect a guaranteed sale and BCU should have picked up on an incorrect part, especially as one as major as the ECU.

Obviously a brokerage boat is different as its buyer beware.

If you were buying a boat, or had an engine survey, would you really expect to pick an incorrect part number on an ECU?
I'm not sure how realistic that is, especially when Volvo keep changing the part numbers.

Difficult to prove though, especially as the boat is 16 years old and has had several owners. Pretty sure a previous owner has changed the ECU and bought something second hand.

To try and pin this on Boats.co.uk does not really seem reasonable assuming that it was working ok at the point of sale and from reading the post all through the warranty period.

It is a piece of electronics that has sadly gone wrong.

There are lots of non original parts in a boat I would imagine - water pumps, electrical bits and so on.

I would hope that an automative specialist could refurbish it.

Now I know VP is not Coastal rides biggest admirer,however........
Chum of mine bought a P46 in Marjorca.
One engine had an engaging habit of going into limp mode usually when half way twixt Majorca and Ibiza.
The remedy involved running downstairs turning everything off and on and away you went again.
Sometimes it did it every trip and sometimes it did not.
Usual fuss with local VP agent and others all having quick pop at it,cleaning everything and bypassing the odd plug was also tried.
Eventually the ECUs were swapped and the problem helpfully moved engines.
There followed much sucking of teeth as new ECUs were mentioned,by now my chum was so PO , he would have happily paid up to sort the problem.
Out of desperation he contacted CR regards a S/H unit, they told him to bring it along for them to have look at and possibly reprogramme.
Whatever they did, the boat has been functioning perfectly ever since and is going on the Fairline celebration cruise. !
