Yippee !
Sold my old boat today !!!!!
As the buyer came from Denmark and did not have time to change the money to GBP like I asked him to, I Now have a envelope stuffed full of 500 Euro notes, that I need to change into GBP at reasonble rates of xchange.
I tried the HSBC bank in Hedge End, nearest to Hamble and had planned to have the purchaser pay his money in Euro to the tune of what we had agreed for the boat as had been agreed with my bank First Direct and then for this to be transferred into my account. Manager (Miserable git) there said its going to be 1600 Euros commision on 18000 Euros. Thats nearly 10%. "Take it or leave it" were his words. So I told him what an unpleasant banker he was !
I now have to open a foreign currency account with First D, send or take the money to them in Leeds and exchange at my leisure, well after 2 weeks or so. Anyone else had this problem trying to change Euros

Ill have em

Um I think there might be some money-laundering laws saying you cant accept more than 9 grand in cash in the UK for a single transaction.

Assuming that's all ok however can I buy 10,000 euros off you please?. I always need euros. I'll pay you a rate equal to the middle of the bank's offer-bid, ie the price quoted in the FT that morning. That way we both save on offer-to-bid spread and commission

After you've banked them in your Euro account, I'll take a TT of 10,000 euros off you (to my Euro account in London) and I'll TT the sterling equivalent to your UK sterling bank account. Howsabout that?

Sold our boat last week and went for a fare well sail last weekend both SWMBO and I are really sad. The boat suited our purposes and sailed well but time to move on. I have sold many motorcycles cars and previous boats but cannot say I ever felt the regret that I feel about this one. Must close mind to this one and look forward to new boat!
On a separate note if I ever want cheap currency I go to shops that quote total amount - no hidden charges- often luggage shops in London. You may need to visit a few though my understanding is that you are breaking the law if you accept more than £9000 in cash for anything now!

Its not just the commission but the exchange rate that you need to watch as well. Some money exchangers will quote 'no commission' but they are making their profit on giving you a lousy exchange rate. Talk to a bank that knows you ie. you have an account there and ask to be put through to the foreign exchange dept. Explain the situation and they might be able to give you an acceptable deal. Otherwise, jfm's offer is well worth considering. FWIW, I'm happy to buy some Euros from you on the same basis
On the other hand, if you feel like a punt, it might be worthwile hanging on to the Euros for a while as many peeps feel that Sterling is only going to get weaker

Money laundering to be changed, any amount any suspicion and it must be reported. Was up to 10K

Nah , JFM is right , you now have to register if you are a business and expect to do cash transactions > €15000 , about err.... £15000 next week.

However I'm told you can now expect a hard time if you take cash through Customs but I can't find anywhere that it is actually "illegal" - as some claim .. loads of rumours abound though.

Must be making the French and Irish a lot more uncomfortable than us ninnies.

Also very unpatriotic of us to so obviously buy euros .... undoubtedly same pople who devoutly protect the continuing existence of The Pound Sterling .... pah

Re: Ill have em

It's all ok. If you transact large cash as a business you have to register and report etc. But private individuals can do cash transactions in their private capacity, as here.

It had better be ok as I have agreed today to buy Chris's Euros. Nice to cut out the bank's spread, dontcha think? Perhaps this forum could set up an online FX dealing room
