Joining NMEA 0183 cables

Just wondered, if you have an AIS unit with a power/data cable included (for NMEA 0183) and a chart plotter also with power/data cable, what is best way to join those very thin coloured data cables - crimping or Scotchlok type connectors.

Beware there are two sizes. For 0183 you need the smaller ones (up to 4mm). The 6mm ones are good for solar or similar larger dia requirements.

Mixed with wiska 308 or similar boxes with glands make great waterproof solutions.

Cheaper in bulk or from electrical distributor or eBay are decent sources.

To be honest anything is OK, the actual electrical connections are only taking data so they just need to join. I have soldered, crimped and chocolate blocked them in the past, but as the wires are so thin make sure the insulation is supported too. From memory AIS baud rates are high speed so your plotter port needs to be configured as a high speed port. Not all of them can, especially budget models designed mainly for US lakes.

I used the bigger ones as that was all I had. They work fine but if you are buying them the smaller ones make more sense.

Have to admit mine are connected with a bog standard choc box.

I've choc blocked ... crimped RC Servo pins onto the leads ... twiddled them together and taped .... soldered ... all sorts ...

As another says - there's no real power load - its data and as long as the contact joint is clean - it works.
