Johnson\'s Polish - very boaty.

This afternoon, well early evening, whilst having a g & t in the cockpit SWMBO looked down at the transom between the two hulls and complained how diry it was looking.
Down below she goes and gets some Johnson's Pronto - probably Spains version of Pledge. I have to lift up the after deck so that she can get to it, and she proceeds to polish it. Believe me it looks dammed good and the polish dont cost any where near what marine polish costs.
This is on a steel hulled cat so dont know how it would work on "plastic" - but at least try it when you run out of the expensive stuff.
Now back to the g & t's.

as a warning most domestic & car/auto polishes contain silicone, so you may have problems if you ever want to paint the boat.

How do they paint cars after owners use auto polish?

I would presume you just sand down and clean before painting. Just waiting for an expert reply.
On the other side its bloody cheap in comparison to stuff bought from a chandlers though.

You can buy all the materials needed to treat areas that have been exposed to silicone. Once applied paint or spray as normal.

use dto use stuff called "flo-rite" mixed into the paint - let the paint flow over any silicon patches smoothly and prevented the paint being thrown off.

Ideal way is to remove the silicones but this can be next to impossible.

Funny isn't it, how peeps just knock your idea, and find reasons it cant be done, instead of just saying "what a good idea, I will try that"!

I guess I worked in Israel too long to pass up a chance of saving money my boy!
Could not find any silicon polish removers last night on google but sure they must exist. Cant really see why a good sanding and clean with acetone is not good enough. I will try it.

I know that they probably don't care too much, but all the bike mags, car mags too probably, use Mr.Sheen to polish up machines for photo shoots. I used to us it on the bike too.

Agree entirely. Seems in England (I'm English and not been off this isle) the only way others can get above you is to knock you down.

The car trade respray cars that have been polished with all sorts. There are solutions to clean everything. I'll ask my friend who works in a bodyshop....if I can remember.

So what polish should I use AFTER my boat has been painted? It was done recently, and I would like to protect the paint job over the winter (out of the water).

Re: Johnson\'s Polish - very boaty.

Having worked for a paint manufacturer (Vehicle refinishing paint) in the recent past, let me add my twopenny worth.

Silicone can be a problem when repainting as it causes "fish eyes" which are unsightly and difficult to remove. Having said that, if the surface is properly prepared it rarely causes a problem; to the extent that I would be inclined to say that if you have a problem with silicone then you haven't prepared the surface properly. Use acetone to clean the surface initially by all means, but I would also clean the surface with whatever the manufacturer recommends before applying the paint.

A boat is usually polished less frequently than a car (except in one marina which I could mention!) and therefore it is safe to assume that silicone will be less of a problem. FWIW if I were planning to paint a boat I would be inclined to avoid using a silicone polish during the season before doing the job. However there is no need to get hung up on it. The rest of the time I would be relaxed about using any polish.

With regards the "Flo rite" material which was mentioned earlier. IIRC this is a silicone based material which can be effective. (It seems to work by loading up the paint with so much silicone that it ends up flowing over the job without a problem). If you have a silicone problem then it can be worth using, but I wouldn't bother unless I knew that it was needed. FWIW this stuff used to be a real problem in the garage trade. If a sprayshop used it then you would end up with silicone all over the place. Once there you could never get rid of the silicone, and the only solution was to keep using "Flo rite" all the time! All very academic though...most of us end up painting outside without the luxury of a heated sprayshop!

Thanks for that Joe. I can use the cheapo stuff to make her look good, then still clean her off properly when she needs a splash of paint.
