Job's worth management on the Hamble

Re: Job\'s worth management on the Hamble

On the Medina it's fairly common practice for cheapskates in expensive boats to tie up on someone elses empty pontoon to avoid having to pay for a visitors berth while they visit the Folly.
I don't think any sane person would begrudge their berth being used in an emergency, and I certainly wouldn't mind anyone using mine if I was asked first (with a few obvious provisos), but to just assume you can pick up anybodys mooring as and when you feel like it is not on.

Why on earth not, your email address is quoted HERE for all and sundry to see, so getting quoted on a forum is going to be the least of your problems!

Re: Job\'s worth management on the Hamble

As I thought I had already made clear, I have no objection whatsoever if forumites would like to email me at work with legitimate concerns about any aspect of managing the Hamble. The only reason that I am unhappy about having my email address advertised overtly on the forum is that it will undoubtedly increase the amount of spam which I get, which I can well do without.

Re: Job\'s worth management on the Hamble

At this time of year there are lots of visitors mooring on the river and in marinas available even in the Hamble. He chose to go almost three miles up the river past all the Harbour Board moorings and five marinas. If he had gone any further he would have hit the bridge. All he wanted to do was to save himelf the cost of a nights mooring. Picking up a free mooring when there is no alternative may be acceptable but in this case it was not.

Leobhan was definitely not told to leave the shelter of the harbour - he was merely invited to use one of the designated visitor moorings (for which, incidently, there is a modest charge, even on a stormy night) instead of a private one.

One man's modest may very well be another's rip off

[ QUOTE ]

The next morning, the reports of damaged boats were fairly evenly spread over the entire length of the River although, curiously, there was no reported damage to any of the boats on the visitors pontoon.

No surprise that: the visitors will most likely have had crew on board - able to take action if required.

Re: Job\'s worth management / the other side of the coin

As the pontoon in question is immediately adjacent to my own mooring, I am pleased that the Berthing Masters are actually 'on the case', as we suffer greatly from too many inept and uncaring visitors to the Jolly Sailor creating damage to moored boats and departing leaving the owners to pick up the damge bills. My own costs ammounted to over £4k in one year. Yes, hit and run skippers are with us, like it or not.

I am surprised by the unhelpfulness of the Berthing Masters though, as they are usually cooperative, treated properly, and the weather forecast certainly supported your seeking shelter in the basin rather than down-river.

You're not listening! - Your email address has already fallen in to the hands of the spammers: you cannot undo this!

To reduce your spam, you could either
1.) Install software that detects the spam and quarantines it into a separate folder
2.) Preferred option:
Ditch your current email address.
Set up a new one.
Remove the email address from the web page.
Replace it by a link to a "Contact the Harbourmaster" form.
The form will have a box for people to type in their message, and will forward the email to your email address. The form should also have a "CAPTCHA" image (e.g. distorted text that only humans can read) to prevent automated input.

Although you probably can't do this yourself, your IT dept should be able to sort something out.
